James Gunn Stresses Out the Importance of Test Screening and Provides an Update on ‘Paradise Lost’

As a seasoned gamer with countless hours spent immersed in the worlds of DC Comics and the MCU, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation and excitement as James Gunn takes the helm of the DC Universe (DCU). After witnessing the tumultuous journey of the DCEU, it’s refreshing to see a fresh start under new leadership.

Warner Bros., the company that owns DC Comics characters, aimed to emulate Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) success by creating their own interconnected movie universe, initially known as the DCEU. Despite its potential, star-studded cast, and some truly exceptional films, the DCEU was fated for an early demise due to a series of poor decisions and missteps throughout its development.

Following a series of setbacks, the initial leader of the universe, Zack Snyder, was let go, giving way to Marvel veteran director James Gunn and Peter Safran who assumed control over the revamped shared universe, now known as the DCU. When Gunn stepped into the DCU, it was in complete chaos, so he opted for a fresh start and developed a new fictional universe, with its first phase set to commence soon.

Currently, numerous projects are in the works for DCU, many of which have been thoroughly covered right here on Fiction Horizon. One upcoming project is the prequel series to Wonder Woman titled “Paradise Lost”. This series will delve into the political landscapes of Themyscira prior to when Wonder Woman became a significant character. More recently, Gunn has shared some updates about this series, and we’re excited to share those insights with you now.

The upcoming “Paradise Island Lost” project remains somewhat enigmatic, with details scarce, but it’s expected to delve into the backstory of Wonder Woman within the DCU context. This series will take us on a journey to Themyscira island prior to Wonder Woman’s birth, uncovering the power plays, conspiracies, and political upheavals among its all-female inhabitants. The title is inspired by the comic book story arc “Paradise Island Lost” by Phil Jimenez and George Pérez, which portrayed an internal conflict on the island, and the series has been likened to “Game of Thrones” in terms of its dark and complex narrative style.

Recently, on Threads, Gunn was asked about the state of Paradise Lost, and here is what he said:

I can envision several drafts being sent.” And although Gunn’s response was straightforward (“yes”), it does indicate that the show is in development and that Gunn has ideas for the series, which is exciting news.

Furthermore, during his interaction with fans, James Gunn emphasized the significance of test screenings for him. He admitted to liking this approach, clarifying that the statement made doesn’t relate to the recent speculations concerning the Joker sequel.
