Superman, portrayed by David Corenswet, is set to return on the big screen, marking a fresh beginning for the DC Extended Universe. Other superheroes such as Mister Terrific, Hawkgirl, Metamorpho, and Green Lantern Guy Gardner will also be featured in this film. However, as stated by DC Studios co-head and Superman director James Gunn, this group is not the Justice League. Instead, they are referred to as “the Justice Gang” in related materials. Interestingly, Gunn clarified that his DCU currently does not have a Justice League, at least not for now. When asked about setting up an eventual Justice League by Entertainment Weekly, this was Gunn’s response.
Of course, of course. But there is no Justice League in this world.not yet.
If directly asked about whether a Justice League project was incorporated into the plans for Gods and Monsters Chapter 1 of the DCU, Gunn merely replied with a hint of secrecy, “Sure.” Regarding David Corenswet’s Kal-El potentially joining the Justice League in the future, the actor shared his approach: “I prefer to remain blissfully unaware, and when James shares the details, it becomes an exciting revelation. If Justice League is something he has in mind, that sounds fantastic to me. I’ll keep it at the back of my thoughts and see what transpires.
Even though the Justice League has had various expansions including many members, the most recognized teams were formed by a group of seven key heroes, often referred to as the “Core 7”. The initial team consisted of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman, and Martian Manhunter. However, the seventh position is frequently interchangeable. For instance, in the Justice League animated series, Hawkgirl took Aquaman’s place. In DC Comics’ New 52 reboot, Cyborg replaced Martian Manhunter. In the DCEU, they chose to exclude a seventh founder, leaving the team with six members. The phrase “Unite the Seven” used in promotional materials seems to have been more of a marketing strategy rather than an indication of the exact number of original founders.
As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled about the upcoming arrival of Wonder Woman in the DC Universe, joining forces with Batman (as depicted in Brave and the Bold), Superman, Green Lantern John Stewart, and potentially, the Wally West Flash and Martian Manhunter. With Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced) making her appearance alongside Superman, it seems we’re moving towards assembling the beloved animated team right before our eyes. If James Gunn manages to bring these characters together for his Justice League, I must admit, that lineup has a certain allure to it.
