James Gunn says fans are most excited about seeing a classic blue and grey Batman costume in the new DC Universe.
James Gunn talked about the suit for a new character on Threads, explaining that while fans have strong opinions about what it should look like, he believes the character’s story, writing, and the actor playing them are far more important. He noted that fans seem to prefer a blue and grey suit, or one with yellow accents, but emphasized these details aren’t his primary focus.

Gunn pointed out that fan preferences are always mixed, even when it comes to the most popular ideas. He explained, “People are definitely sharing what they’d like, but even the most requested color scheme – blue and grey – has an equal number of fans and detractors. The next two most popular suggestions also receive a similar amount of opposition. Ultimately, we need to make choices that best serve the movie and its story,” Gunn said.

The next Batman movie, part of the new DC Universe, will be called The Brave and The Bold. It will explore the dynamic between Batman and his extended family, and will introduce Bruce Wayne’s son, Damian, as the new Robin. Director James Gunn has called the film a unique and unusual story about a father and son relationship.
James Gunn explained where the new Batman fits into the DC Universe. After Gunn and Peter Safran were hired, DC CEO David Zaslav stated there wouldn’t be multiple Batmans. Ben Affleck won’t reprise his role as the Batman from the previous DC Extended Universe. However, Matt Reeves’ Batman films will continue as separate stories under the ‘DC Elseworlds’ banner. The upcoming film, ‘The Brave and The Bold,’ will draw inspiration from the popular ‘Batman’ comic book run by Grant Morrison from 2006 to 2013.
Andy Muschietti, the director of The Flash, was originally going to direct this film, with his sister Barbara producing it alongside James Gunn and Peter Safran. However, production was put on hold in December 2024 to avoid clashing with the release of Matt Reeves’s The Batman: Part II.
So, by February, James Gunn already had a writer collaborating with him on the script. Interestingly, at that stage, Andy Muschietti had stepped back from being directly involved in the writing process.
