James Gunn has stated that the new Supergirl movie won’t directly follow the storyline of the original comic book. He shared this while expressing his enthusiasm for the film and its star, as fans eagerly anticipate details about the Supergirl story within the revamped DC Universe.
So, James Gunn told us the new Supergirl movie definitely pulls inspiration from the ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ comic – that Tom King and Bilquis Evely did – but it’s not a straight adaptation. They’re taking those ideas and running with them in their own direction, which I’m totally excited about!
The project is a large-scale, emotionally driven story set in space. Director James Gunn specifically highlighted Milly Alcock’s performance, describing the film as a space fantasy similar in feel to Guardians of the Galaxy, but inspired by the Tom King book. While not a strict adaptation, the film captures the spirit of the source material. These statements are the basis for the latest information available.
Supergirl is the second film in the revamped DC Universe. Directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, it stars Jenna Ortega as a young Kara Zor-El, still discovering her role in the world. The movie also features Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, and Jason Momoa, with James Gunn and Peter Safran producing through DC Studios.
This film follows Kara’s spacefaring adventure as she embarks on a dangerous, revenge-fueled mission. What starts as a significant personal moment quickly descends into tragedy, and the story reveals a more vulnerable and intense side of Kara than we’ve seen before.
This movie has been in the works for several years, originally starting as part of the previous DC movie universe. We briefly saw a version of Supergirl, played by Sasha Calle, in the 2023 film The Flash. When James Gunn and Peter Safran became heads of DC Studios in late 2022, they revised the project to align with their new vision for the DC Universe, and the updated film was officially announced in early 2023.
Principal photography for Supergirl started in early 2025 and finished a few months afterward, with filming locations in England and Scotland. The movie is scheduled to premiere in U.S. cinemas on June 26th and will launch the first storyline within the new DC Universe, known as Gods and Monsters.
