As a die-hard DC fan who has been following the twists and turns of the universe for decades, I must say that James Gunn‘s announcement about the continuation of Peacemaker in the new DCU is nothing short of exhilarating! The fact that most of season one remains canon, save for the Justice League cameos, is a testament to Gunn’s commitment to maintaining some level of connection with the existing lore.
The Creature Commandos are set to launch James Gunn and Peter Safran’s revamped DC Universe. However, this new superhero cinematic universe won’t be a complete break from the past. With several actors returning to their old roles under the new leadership, elements of the previous DCEU will still be part of the rebooted franchise. The question is how much of the past will remain official. As for Peacemaker, a large portion of season one’s events are still considered canon in the DCU, with one major change. The unexpected Justice League appearances no longer hold validity.
Gunn discussed with IGN how the occurrences within the DCEU will be significant for his DCU. As we follow along, we’ll discover more about this connection. For instance, when a series such as “Creature Commandos” makes references to movies, shows, or moments from the DCEU – like Gunn’s film “The Suicide Squad” – those elements will be considered part of the lore for the new cinematic universe.
It’s quite straightforward. In essence, you can grasp how Peacemaker‘s first season will play out as Gunn stated that, with only a few exceptions like Justice League, most of what we see in Peacemaker is considered canonical. However, they plan to address the Justice League issue in the upcoming season of Peacemaker.
At the culmination of Max’s initial season, the Justice League made their appearance. This wasn’t a glorious occasion for the team, as they showed up after Peacemaker and his allies had successfully saved the world. However, this isn’t the problem James Gunn will be addressing. In his DC Universe, Gunn plans to unveil a fresh interpretation of the Justice League’s heroes, a lineup that won’t feature Ezra Miller’s Flash or Jason Momoa’s Aquaman – characters who were part of Peacemaker.
In other words, will the characters’ absence play a role in the ongoing story of the DC Universe, or will it seem as though they were never part of it to begin with? It remains to be seen how all the established lore will unfold once the DC Universe truly begins.
