Starting this December with the introduction of “Creature Commandos” and the following year with “Superman”, James Gunn’s new DC Universe will finally commence. Although we were aware of the upcoming projects, there was uncertainty about the main narrative for Chapter 1 – Gods and Monsters. However, a post from Gunn has shed some light on this mystery, suggesting that an iconic DC Comics series could serve as the foundation for the larger storyline of the DC Universe. It seems that Darwyn Cooke’s “The New Frontier” may play a significant role, as Gunn expressed his affection for it and acknowledged its enchanting alternate history has greatly impacted DC Studios.

2004’s “New Frontier,” penned and illustrated by the late Darwyn Cooke, weaves a tale covering nearly two decades, from the tail end of WWII to the space race period in the early ’60s. In this DC Universe narrative, a Justice Society, who fought against Nazis, retired by the early ’50s, leaving only Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman active. As the ’50s transition into the ’60s, new characters like The Flash, Green Lantern, and Martian Manhunter appear. They collaborate to solve a mystery revolving around an ancient primordial evil lurking within Earth, ultimately bringing them together as the Justice League.
Although a full reboot of “New Frontier” isn’t expected, its themes might influence the DC Universe instead. Notably, an animated adaptation was released in 2008 as a direct-to-video film. The DCU we’ll see is likely to have roots tracing back to World War II.
