James Gunn Says a New WONDER WOMAN Movie Is in the Works

Lately, the leader of Warner Bros. identified Superman, Batman, Supergirl, and Wonder Woman as the “core elements” of the DC Universe. With a new Superman film set for release this summer and Supergirl slated for the following year, there’s also a planned movie based on The Brave and the Bold, featuring Batman and Robin, although it’s further along in development. However, there seems to be no recent update regarding Wonder Woman. But now, James Gunn has confirmed that her return is underway. Here’s what he told Entertainment Weekly:

Wonder Woman stands apart from Paradise Lost, as it’s more leisurely paced, yet it’s progressing. We are currently engaged in the process of writing Wonder Woman. At this moment, Wonder Woman is being crafted.

As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that there’s been some buzz about a new Wonder Woman film in the works! James Gunn, however, didn’t disclose who’s penning the script yet, saving that detail for a future reveal. He was tight-lipped about who will don the cape and crown of the DCU’s Wonder Woman, leaving us to speculate. While he hasn’t confirmed Gal Gadot’s exit as our beloved Princess Diana of Themyscira, it seems like a possibility given the changes in the cast for Superman and Batman. If they’re bringing in new faces for those iconic roles, it makes sense that they might want a fresh actress to embody Wonder Woman too, just to avoid any more confusion with the old DCEU.

In the scorching summer of 2017, Patty Jenkins’ initial Wonder Woman movie proved to be both a critical and financial triumph. This film was the first DCEU production to receive positive reviews from critics, following Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, and Suicide Squad. However, its sequel, Wonder Woman 1984, underperformed significantly, debuting during the peak of the pandemic and landing on HBO Max. Yet, Wonder Woman is such an iconic figure in the DC universe that she can’t be ignored. With Gunn planning his Justice League, he needs to solidify her presence within the main group. We currently have a Superman, a Supergirl, an upcoming Batman, and three Green Lanterns to choose from. Given that there’s a new Wonder Woman in development, we can’t wait to learn more about Gunn’s strategies for the Flash. The DC Universe also requires a Scarlet Speedster.
