James Gunn Reveals Why Nova Didn’t Make the Cut in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’

As a long-time Marvel fan with memories of flipping through comic books in my youth, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and nostalgia when it comes to the potential introduction of Nova in the MCU. The Nova Corps have been an integral part of the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe for years, and their most iconic member, Richard Rider, has been a fan favorite since his debut.

In the 2014 movie, Guardians of the Galaxy, the Nova Corps made their debut as guardians of the planet Xandar, safeguarding the galaxy and an artifact known as the Orb (later revealed to be the Power Stone). In the 2018 film Avengers: Infinity War, we learn that Thanos had secretly destroyed Xandar to obtain the stone.

Despite frequent appearances by the Nova Corps throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe, their standout member, Nova, has not yet been introduced. Director James Gunn clarified on Twitter that he opted to exclude Nova from the Guardians of the Galaxy films as he preferred to limit the human characters in the narrative.

On previous occasions, James Gunn used this line of thought. Earlier, he shared that he altered Drax’s background for a similar purpose – to avoid having an excess of human characters in a cosmic narrative.

In a different phrasing, Gunn believed that an interstellar journey primarily populated by Earthlings wouldn’t resonate well and would prove challenging to summarize succinctly. Consequently, he chose to assemble the Guardians as an eclectic mix of extraterrestrial beings and outcasts hailing from various planets, thereby making the team more distinctive and aligning with the narrative’s overall theme.

I preferred not to create a space saga featuring a crowd of Earth-dwellers who happened to be there by mere chance.

In simpler terms, could you imagine expressing that idea within the first 20 minutes of a film? I was envisioning a team of extraterrestrials and interplanetary orphans, united as one.

Instead of James Gunn introducing Nova initially, it was decided not to do so at the time. Yet, assuming everything proceeds smoothly, we can expect the character of Nova to be presented shortly.

Approximately half a year ago, Marvel disclosed intentions for a live-action Nova series, though they cautioned fans that early stages of development don’t necessarily mean the project will come to fruition. More recently, during an update on the Phase Hero podcast, Marvel’s Winderbaum shared that the Nova show has surpassed its initial development phase and is currently progressing well.

The project is currently being worked on, much as we discussed during D23. Since we’re focusing more on development than production at this time, it’s like something simmering in a pot. However, there’s plenty to look forward to. What I’ve glimpsed thus far is genuinely promising, that much I can assure you.

Especially like tonally. The vibe of that show is very unique and very cool.
