As a seasoned lifestyle expert with a penchant for superhero films, I must say that James Gunn‘s approach to the new Superman film is refreshingly authentic. The decision to include the iconic trunks, inspired by David Corenswet’s compelling argument, adds a touch of nostalgia while maintaining a contemporary feel.
We’ve had a peek at the latest trailer for the forthcoming Superman movie. Although it seems to offer a brand-new interpretation of the superhero, the production grappled with an age-long dilemma: should they incorporate the traditional underwear-like briefs on his blue suit or not.
During a conversation with Ross Bonaime from Collider, director James Gunn shared some behind-the-scenes insights. It was the main cast member, David Corenswet, who successfully persuaded Gunn to reinstate the iconic trunks in the movie.
To begin with, as per the director of Guardians of the Galaxy, his original concept for the character’s costume did not include briefs.
In summary, Gunn stated that the final outcome wasn’t particularly intense; it had been intense at times. For a significant stretch, he was a member of the team opposed to the use of costumes with trunks. This stance persisted for quite some time. Moreover, when Snyder was working on it, he experimented with countless variations of costumes featuring trunks, just as we did. However, until the very last moment, Gunn expressed his preference that the costumes should not include trunks.
Yet, he found himself reminiscing about the instance when David Corenswet presented his argument: “Superman encourages children not to fear him.
In simpler terms, the CEO of DC Studios remembered Corenswet’s explanation. The actor emphasized that Superman possesses extraordinary abilities, such as shooting beams from his eyes and moving vehicles using just a puff of breath.
As a lifestyle expert, I’d put it this way: “I strive to embody hope and positivity as a role model,” Corenswet shared, echoing the sentiments of the Twisters actor. He believes that Superman, in his choice of attire resembling a professional wrestler, creates an image that instills trust rather than fear in people.
James Gunn emphasized that it would be wrong to try and make David Corenswet’s portrayal of Superman too somber or grave.
“He’s the first one, brightly colored, and that’s who he is,” Gunn said.
In Gunn’s Superman production, Rachel Brosnahan portrays Lois Lane, while Nicholas Hoult takes on the role of Lex Luthor. The movie promises appearances from additional superheroes including Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), Guy Gardner (portrayed by Nathan Fillion), Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan), and others.
Superman is set to be released on July 11, 2024.
