In the upcoming days, the TV adaptation of the DC Universe’s Creature Commandos will make its appearance. Unlike the Marvel Cinematic Universe, DC is keen on testing new grounds with comic book narratives and delving into the distinctive atmosphere of their own brand
Moving ahead with their R-rated series, CEO and director James Gunn explains how “Creature Commandos” will align perfectly within the DC Universe’s timeline. In a chat with Entertainment Weekly, he delves into the unique ways this show breaks away from conventional Marvel Cinematic Universe narratives
In an interview with the media, Gunn expressed his longstanding appreciation for DC Comics, stating, “What I’ve always admired about DC Comics is their ability to publish both mainstream comics that run continuously, as well as unique titles like Watchmen, The Dark Knight Returns, and All-Star Superman, which have distinct tones.”
Additionally, he pointed out, “It differed from Marvel in this aspect, and it’s crucial for our studio to uphold this: each production should reflect a distinct vision of the artists involved.”
Currently, DC Studios is developing a new Superman film, with Gunn taking on the director’s role. Regarding Creature Commandos, viewers will witness monster-like beings not just clashing with heroes, but also grappling with their troubled histories
Among several other talented actors, you’ll find Anya Chalotra, Frank Grillo, Sean Gunn, Viola Davis, Indira Varma, and Zoe Chao gracing the screen on this show
Based on what’s been shared, it seems that the upcoming show might share some resemblances with the 2021 movie Suicide Squad and the Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy in terms of their overall style or themes
James Gunn explained further by stating, “I’m accustomed to handling unusual individuals, those who don’t fit typical molds, and eccentrics.” He continued, “That’s what Guardians encompasses, and Creature Commandos shares similarities, but without the emotional depth. The Guardians have strong character foundations, but that isn’t always true for the creatures.”
As a lifestyle expert, I’d put it this way: “In an unusual turn of events, a covert squad is assembled from incarcerated individuals, marking the inception of what would become known as the Suicide Squad.”
Creature Commandos will be available to stream starting December 5.
