In contrast to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), James Gunn’s new DC Universe presents a world where Metahumans have been around for approximately 300 years, significantly reshaping history. Unlike the MCU, which mirrors our familiar “our” world with established cities like New York, the United States in the DCU lacks these major metropolitan hubs. Instead, its cities and governments differ substantially, as do the powerful conglomerates. Recently, Gunn disclosed another notable distinction about his DCU, and it’s related to Batman. In an interview with Rainn Wilson for Interview Magazine, Gunn hinted at Wayne Enterprises being one of four dominating corporations that wield influence in the DCU. Here’s what he mentioned:
1. The DCU is a world with a long history of Metahumans.
2. Unlike the MCU, the United States in the DCU lacks major metropolitan centers like New York.
3. Cities, governments, and powerful corporations differ significantly.
4. Gunn recently revealed that Wayne Enterprises is one of four influential corporations in the DCU (related to Batman).
In our fictional universe (DCU), unlike Earth, we don’t have cities like New York City or Los Angeles. Instead, we have Metropolis, Evergreen, and Coast City. This world has been inhabited by superhuman beings, known as Metahumans, for at least three centuries. They have significantly impacted our lives.
As we move forward in the DCU, I believe there are now three main groups emerging. These include the Metahumans, the governing bodies, and the corporations. The corporations, surprisingly, play a crucial role. Notable among them are Luthor Corp, Lord Tech, Stagg Industries, and Wayne Enterprises – these four companies are engaged in a power struggle of another kind.
In simpler terms, it’s been confirmed that Wayne Enterprises, like Batman, has been a part of the DC Universe since 2023, as announced by Gunn in The Brave and the Bold. A quick appearance of Batman was also seen in Creature Commandos. Interestingly, the new portrayal of Wayne Enterprises might outshine all its previous film versions, potentially holding a position among the top four global corporations. While the Wayne Enterprises from The Dark Knight trilogy and The Batman were substantial, it remains uncertain if they hold such a significant global influence as suggested by the latest revelations.
In simpler terms, Gunn characterized these businesses as having no moral compass, neither inherently good nor bad. However, their leaders can be either virtuous or villainous, which significantly influences things. He highlighted that LuthorCorp contributed positively to the world, despite Lex Luthor being a negative character. We assume Bruce Wayne is among the noble ones. Given Wayne Enterprises’ size in the DC Universe, it’s likely we’ll encounter the Wayne Enterprises logo before Batman does, in stories like ‘Lanterns’ and ‘Clayface’. Fortunately, we won’t have to wait too long for Batman to officially make an appearance in the DCU.
