James Gunn has discussed the sources of inspiration for Ultraman in his upcoming Superman film. In a recent interview, Gunn revealed that Ultraman’s appearance and personality were shaped by various influences, such as the comic book antagonist Bizarro and even the character Nuclear Man from the 1987 movie “Superman IV: Peace on Earth.
It tickled me when Kevin Feige, the Marvel Studios president, reached out to me yesterday, expressing his eagerness to see a character he fondly referred to as his ‘old buddy’, Bizarro. I chuckled and agreed that Ultraman bears some resemblance to Bizarro and Nuclear Man, but I see him more as a twisted reflection of Clark.
David, while playing Ultraman, had originally planned for more somber scenes, but it seems that the production process may have rushed things a bit and he ended up appearing with a more exaggerated look due to his prosthetics.
Gunn commented on a scene depicting Ultraman returning to the pocket universe, stating that while it wasn’t intentionally modeled after Superman II, it’s understandable why some viewers might draw comparisons. He explained, “It’s not something I consciously thought about, but who knows? Such ideas subconsciously influence you. You never truly know where your thoughts originate.” Furthermore, he expressed his enjoyment in pondering “where this character is headed and what exciting adventures are in store for him next.
Gunn’s new DC Universe debuts with the Superman movie, featuring David Corenswet portraying Clark Kent. Joining him are Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, and Isabela Merced. The film narrates a tale of Superman dealing with public criticism following his involvement in an international clash orchestrated by Lex Luthor. With assistance from Lois Lane and other heroes, he endeavors to regain the trust of the people.
The movie is receiving positive feedback from both viewers and experts. Based on Rotten Tomatoes, 83% of 421 reviewers have given it a thumbs-up. In their synopsis, they note that the film effectively combines introducing a new universe with maintaining Superman’s human essence as the focal point. On Metacritic, the film has a score of 68 out of 100, indicating generally positive reviews. Critics have commended the vibrant aesthetic and the acting skills of Corenswet and Brosnahan. However, some felt that the movie was overly busy.
It appears that the movie was highly appreciated by viewers, as indicated by CinemaScore polls showing an average rating of A-, the same score earned by Man of Steel. Additionally, PostTrak reports that 86% of viewers had a favorable opinion of the film and 74% said they would strongly recommend it to others.
Generally speaking, James Gunn’s latest Superman movie is viewed as a strong reboot for the character, blending traditional aspects with innovative concepts, all while emphasizing Superman’s human qualities.
