Just like I mentioned before, YouTuber John Campea is now publicly suggesting that James Gunn might not stay with Warner Bros. Discovery after Paramount completes its acquisition, which is anticipated to happen later this year.
Campea makes it clear that he hasn’t spoken to Gunn and this is just his opinion.
He believes James Gunn will request to be released from his contract with Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) before the year’s end. He’s confident Gunn feels disconnected from the current leadership and that WBD CEO David Zaslav will grant his request, according to a source on YouTube.
I absolutely haven’t spoken with James Gunn. This is just my opinion, but I’m very confident that before the year ends, he’ll approach David Zaslav and ask to be released from his contract, feeling he can’t continue working under the current leadership. And I believe Zaslav will grant that request.
Campea then claims Gunn ends up back at Marvel as “Kevin Feige’s heir apparent”:
I believe James Gunn will eventually return to Marvel and be positioned to take over from Kevin Feige when Feige steps down. That’s what I foresee happening. However, given James Gunn’s well-known feelings about Donald Trump, and the close relationship between Henry Ellison and Trump, I don’t think Gunn will remain at DC. I expect he’ll resign.
Campea’s core argument: Gunn vs. the Ellisons
Campea agrees with me, and it’s well-known that Gunn doesn’t like Donald Trump.
Campea portrays the Ellisons as supporters of Donald Trump, a claim that was first noted by Variety and subsequently covered by numerous industry publications.
That’s why Campea says he can’t picture Gunn staying once Paramount is effectively in charge.
The Trump factor keeps landing on Superman
As I mentioned before, the political discussion really took off when the Superman movie came out. The White House’s official account shared a meme depicting Donald Trump as Superman, using the famous slogan “Truth. Justice. The American Way.”
That’s no coincidence.
Gunn already has a public anti-Trump record

unn has been publicly anti-Trump for years, including blunt attacks during Trump’s first term.
Campea believes Gunn wouldn’t want to work for Ellison, and that’s based on what he knows about their past relationship.
Why “Marvel heir apparent” talk is even on the table
While it’s just a guess, it makes sense to think James Gunn might return to Marvel. He achieved major success there directing the three Guardians of the Galaxy films and producing Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame.
Gunn already has strong connections in Hollywood, so if he were to leave his current position with a significant change in ownership, he’d likely receive many offers from studios.
Campea’s plan involves Gunn initiating a departure, leaving on good terms, and ultimately joining Marvel as the future leader after Kevin Feige.
What this means for DC right now
If Paramount retains James Gunn, the focus at DC Studios will shift from celebrating successes to simply wondering if he’ll stay, which isn’t ideal. They need the conversation to be about what exciting new projects are coming, not about potential departures.
If Gunn believes the company is heading into a constant stream of political debate, resigning now allows him to shape the story and prevent being seen as someone who was dismissed after the merger.
Look, from the moment Warner Bros. Discovery changed hands, the writing was on the wall for James Gunn’s plans. It became pretty clear that the door was open again for Zack Snyder’s vision, and honestly, I fully expect another DC reboot to be announced sooner rather than later. It just feels inevitable at this point.
What about Man of Tomorrow?
James Gunn is expected to begin filming his next movie, a sequel to Superman: Man of Tomorrow, shortly. If filming takes around six months, it would coincide with the completion of the agreement between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery.
Gunn recently teased he’s in pre-production. Man of Tomorrow gets released on July 9, 2027.
