James Gunn, who’s directing the upcoming “Superman” film, has shared insights on a movie project he unfortunately couldn’t proceed with. Gunn emphasized the crucial role of a solid screenplay in filmmaking. He detailed that they had a project set up, complete with a director and writer involved, but the script ultimately fell short of expectations.
Originally, our screenplay received approval. We made revisions, even a second and third draft, but it seemed to remain stagnant. It didn’t improve; instead, it continued to be the same,” explained Gunn.
Even if we have skilled professionals on board, a weak script can still make the movie less than stellar.
Given the circumstances, Gunn opted to halt the production as he didn’t want to proceed with a film that might turn out poorly, damaging the reputation of the director, screenwriter, and themselves.
Additionally, he mentioned that it’s uncommon for studios to abandon projects after they’ve been approved, as many prefer not to let down others or refuse. However, Gunn felt that his decision was the appropriate one.
As a cinephile, I’ve often found myself reflecting on the film industry during discussions about my upcoming “Superman” project, and the hurdles Hollywood grapples with today. James Gunn shed light on this when he discussed how oftentimes, movies are pushed towards a release date without a completed script, which then results in a hasty writing process to meet that deadline. In his words, “They decide on a release date, but they don’t have a script yet. Then, they try to write the script to fit into that date.” This approach, according to him, frequently leads to subpar films as the narrative isn’t thoroughly thought out beforehand.
Gunn underscored the vital significance of writers and lamented that the industry often undervalues them. He stated that due to greater creative freedom and control, numerous talented authors now thrive in TV production. Shows such as “Peacemaker” and “Severance”, he explained, provide a platform for these writers to express their creativity and achieve success in ways that movies no longer seem to offer.
The scrapped project underscores Gunn’s dedication to excellence and his refusal to compromise on quality. It’s evident that he considers the script as the cornerstone of a great film, and if it falls short, the production should halt accordingly.
It’s quite possible you’re curious about the movie James Gunn referred to in his recent statement. Unfortunately, he hasn’t explicitly confirmed it yet and may not do so for some time. However, there’s speculation that it could be “The Authority,” a project initially announced as part of Chapter 1: Gods & Monsters many years ago.
The progress on the project has been scarce since its reveal, and recently, Gunn confessed that while the movie remains in his plans, it’s been quite challenging. In simpler terms, he acknowledged that the process has been tough.
Additionally, Gunn shared that the initial author of “The Authority” has been shifted to a different DCU film. He didn’t disclose the title of the new venture yet, but expressed his admiration for the writer’s current work, stating, “I’ve transferred the writer onto another project in the DCU that I believe he’s doing exceptionally well with at the moment.
