Recently, James Gunn discussed the significant response to the newest installment of Peacemaker Season 2, specifically the episode called “Ignorance Is Chris.”
The recent episode, available on HBO Max, has generated a lot of discussion because of its daring plot and a surprising twist: the idyllic world Chris (played by John Cena) believes in is actually Earth-X – a universe where the Nazis were victorious in World War II. It’s a truly shocking revelation.
In a conversation with GQ, Gunn discussed how he developed the episode and approached the delicate topics it covered.
“I absolutely love working on the show. With ‘Peacemaker,’ I have a lot of creative freedom-and honestly, I feel like I have that freedom with all my projects because I make my own decisions and I’m my own boss. But ‘Peacemaker’ is where we really pushed boundaries. We took risks and explored areas that I think others might have avoided,” he explained.
Gunn also acknowledged that taking risks isn’t always easy. “We faced a lot of resistance from different people within the organization, especially regarding this episode. We decided to be bold and tell the story we wanted to tell, without holding back,” he said.
“It’s noteworthy that some people with prejudiced views have labeled me controversial, but I’m comfortable with that. I’m happy to distance myself from those who hold racist beliefs. The positive reception to this episode is really encouraging.”
This episode tackles difficult topics such as racism, but Gunn explained that they were careful to strike a balance between humor and sensitivity. “We’re addressing a really sensitive issue – racism – and also incorporating humor. It’s a delicate situation, but we weren’t trying to avoid it-and I believe we approached it thoughtfully,” he stated.
He also emphasized the need to talk with actress Danielle Brooks, who portrays Adebayo, to ensure she felt good about how the storyline developed.
A particularly striking aspect of the episode is its portrayal of the Earth-X universe. Gunn explained that even those who had seen the entire season before it aired didn’t initially pick up on the subtle hints, such as the absence of people of color in the background scenes. It’s a detail that adds a lot to the story.
“It seems like once people started talking about it online, everyone caught on. I had shown the season to others beforehand, and they completely missed it. And it wasn’t just people of one background – it was a diverse group, including people of color and white people, who simply didn’t realize that all the background actors were white whenever we depicted scenes on Earth X.”
I remember him explaining that a lot of the story revolved around the situation with Adebayo – particularly how it all concluded. He really emphasized that we didn’t want to gloss over it, because while there was a funny side, it was also genuinely frightening. It was all about how we, as a team, approached handling that whole thing,” he shared.
Okay, so this episode gets really interesting when Adrian, or as we know him, Vigilante (Freddie Stroma), comes face-to-face with… himself, but from another Earth! It’s a version of him from Earth-X, and the whole encounter is pretty mind-bending, honestly. It definitely throws a wrench into everything and leaves you wondering what’s going to happen next.
In this new version of the story, Peacemaker is an enemy of Vigilante, which gives us a better understanding of why Vigilante acts the way he does. At the same time, Adebayo quickly learns how dangerous this alternate world is. While walking around Chris’s neighborhood, she faces fear and animosity, clearly showing how bleak things are on Earth-X and hinting at a potentially explosive next-to-last episode. This twist adds another layer to the unfolding drama.
Gunn’s remarks reveal the significant effort dedicated to finding the right balance between the story’s darker elements, exciting action, and comedic moments, all while ensuring the narrative remained powerful. He highlighted that it was crucial to tell the story honestly, even if that meant challenging some viewers.
