James Gunn Once Again Clears Up Pattinson’s Batman Role in DC Universe

James Gunn, director of Superman and co-CEO of DC Studios, has dismissed rumors once more regarding Robert Pattinson’s Batman being part of the main DC Universe. In simple terms, he clarified that it isn’t currently the plan, but with everything in a state of change, they will decide on their next steps.

Matt Reeves presented a unique take on Batman, emphasizing the detective aspect and the grim ambiance of Gotham City. Robert Pattinson delivered a subtle yet impactful portrayal in the role, setting his Batman apart from previous interpretations.

Shortly following Keanu Reeves sharing a sneak peek from the set of The Batman 2, I was thrilled to learn that the script for this anticipated sequel has been wrapped up, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

It was mentioned that someone else might know more about the status of “The Brave and the Bold” movie, as they aren’t sure if it’s actually in development. This statement generated a lot of discussion, so it’s unclear whether the project is moving forward or has been secretly shelved.

Despite Gunn refuting these rumors on numerous occasions, they continue to persist. There’s always been doubt about whether DC Studios is genuinely committed to The Brave and the Bold. Director Andy Muschietti was initially assigned to the project, with the storyline inspired by the comic arc in which Bruce Wayne learns he has a son, Damian, with Talia al Ghul. However, since that announcement, there’s been little news on the project. A writer is said to be involved, but no additional details have emerged yet.

Contrarily, it’s clear that the production of “The Batman 2” is definitely progressing. The announcement was made in April 2022 itself, confirming Robert Pattinson’s return as Batman and Matt Reeves resuming his directorial role. Additionally, Mattson Tomlin is contributing to the script-writing process.

Initially titled “The Batman – Part II“, the movie’s name change has been announced. Filming is projected to commence towards the end of 2025, with a theater release planned for October 1, 2027. The returning cast members include Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred, and Colin Farrell portraying the Penguin.

There’s been a lot of interest among fans about where the Batman movies fit within the broader DC Universe storyline. Since Gunn and Safran assumed control over DC Studios, many have wondered if Pattinson’s portrayal of Batman will be integrated into the main DC Universe. However, Gunn has clarified that Reeves’ Batman films fall under the “Elseworlds” category, indicating they don’t share the same universe as the new Superman and future heroes within the DCU.

Gunn admires Reeves’ work and stated, ‘When someone as significant as Matt Reeves speaks, one must pay close attention.’

As a film enthusiast, I often ponder if it’d be simpler to incorporate Keanu Reeves’ Batman into the DC Universe rather than starting anew with The Brave and the Bold. However, from what I can see, that seems unlikely. The visions of these two directors are poles apart. Gunn prefers grand, flamboyant, comic book-inspired narratives, while Reeves is more inclined towards gritty, crime-centric narratives. Blending those two styles would undeniably be a challenge.

Currently, both projects – The Batman 2 and The Brave and the Bold – are just on paper, but it’s evident that only The Batman 2 is progressing at this point. Fans will continue to monitor developments closely, hoping to learn if The Brave and the Bold becomes a reality or if Pattinson’s Batman will continue as the primary Batman story within DC for the time being, with Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn holding the key to that decision.
