James Gunn Officially Explains the Connection Between the DCEU and the DCU

As a seasoned comic book enthusiast who’s been through the highs and lows of both universes, I can’t help but feel a sense of relief and anticipation at James Gunn‘s approach to the DCU. The DCEU, despite some brilliant individual performances and moments, has always felt like a disjointed narrative. But now, with Gunn’s clarification that only referenced DCEU events become canon in the DCU, it feels like we’re finally getting a coherent storyline that fans can truly embrace.

Regardless of some less-than-stellar releases or outright flops, the Marvel Cinematic Universe remains a consistent and well-structured narrative world that continues to progress. Admittedly, opinions on these movies and their tales may vary, but one point remains undeniable: the continuity within the MCU is truly remarkable.

In contrast to the DC Comics universe, the DCEU (DC Extended Universe) was created as a response to the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe), but it didn’t meet expectations. While there were some impressive standalone performances, Zack Snyder wasn’t able to effectively tie all the pieces together into a coherent narrative. Additionally, several questionable decisions were made, which ultimately led to the DCEU falling short of its goals. This outcome was predictable in many ways.

Warner Bros. subsequently enlisted James Gunn and Peter Safran to rectify any issues, and these two are currently constructing the DC Universe (DCU), which is intended as DC’s counterpart to the MCU. However, it remains unclear how this new DCU will intertwine with the existing DCEU, given that Gunn is essentially starting anew.

I was thrilled to attend this year’s bustling New York Comic-Con as a fan! Being there gave me an exclusive opportunity to chat with James Gunn himself, who shared insights on various topics. From upcoming films and series, he unveiled tantalizing details that left us eagerly anticipating more. Not only did he answer our burning questions, but he also divulged some intriguing tidbits about the projects in the pipeline. What a fantastic experience!

One question that came up was concerning the connection between the former DCEU and the current DCU, and here’s how James Gunn responded to it:

At the NYCC panel, James Gunn elaborated on how events from the DCEU (DC Extended Universe) tie into the broader DCU (DC Universe): “We make references to past occurrences. And because we acknowledge these events, they become part of the official history in the DCU.

This isn’t just a lingering query among fans, but a crucial one for our collective understanding. It’s vital we clarify matters now so everyone knows the established narrative, the points to back up their debates, and the tales they can confidently reference.

As a dedicated fan, it’s now clearer than ever thanks to Gunn’s insight: The DCEU may not be part of the main DC Universe (DCU), but specific instances or moments within the DCEU that are mentioned or referred to in the DCU, become canon. However, this doesn’t make the entirety of the DCEU canonical. This is particularly applicable to Rick Flag Jr.’s tale, the upcoming Blue Beetle project, and perhaps Paradise Lost as well. Keep in mind that more such connections might emerge in the future. So, when uncertain, just recall Gunn’s words, and you’ll be able to tell whether a DCEU event also exists within the DCU.
