James Gunn and Nathan Fillion have publicly expressed their support for Damon Lindelof after he faced criticism for comments he made in the past about Green Lantern, as well as recent remarks from Grant Morrison.
People offered their support in the comments section of Lindelof’s Instagram post, where he acknowledged the joke wasn’t very good, apologized to Green Lantern fans, and affirmed his long-standing appreciation for the characters and the Green Lantern universe.

James Gunn reacts with a green heart
Gunn kept it simple.
The DC Studios co-head replied to the comments with a green heart emoji, which was a clear reference to Green Lantern and a public sign of support for Lindelof.
Even though it was short, James Gunn’s reply is noteworthy because he usually stays out of the ongoing discussion about the future of the Lanterns franchise. By publicly responding to Lindelof’s comment, Gunn is making his position clear. It’s also worth noting that Gunn, like Lindelof, is a fan of Grant Morrison’s work.

Nathan Fillion goes further in defending Lindelof
Nathan Fillion was more direct.
Nathan Fillion called the incident humorous, saying ‘No harm, no foul!’ and praised the work being done. He’s also set to reprise his role as Guy Gardner in the upcoming series Lanterns, following his appearance in Superman.
This comment is important because it goes beyond simply defending Lindelof. It also downplays the criticism and implies Fillion doesn’t believe the controversy is a big deal.

Comes after Lindelof admitted the joke was dumb
The reactions from Gunn and Fillion came after Lindelof tried to put the controversy to rest.
Lindelof explained he’d made an ill-considered joke during a podcast appearance and acknowledged he hadn’t been careful with his wording. He also shared that Green Lantern was a childhood hero and that green has always been his favorite color, enthusiastically calling it “really awesome.”
Lindelof expressed his pride in having contributed to Lanterns and emphasized that it would be unfair to the people he worked with to claim anything different.

Morrison’s criticism clearly sparked a response
Grant Morrison previously criticized Lindelof’s remarks, pointing out that the core concept of Green Lantern isn’t inherently flawed and asking why creators would accept superhero projects if they appear ashamed of the original stories.
Morrison also cautioned against starting off by upsetting fans of Green Lantern, emphasizing that the creative team should avoid that at all costs.
Lindelof acknowledged the criticism really bothered him with his apology. Now, Gunn and Fillion are publicly supporting him.
Lanterns hits HBO Max in August.
