As a die-hard fan of both Marvel and DC, I must admit, I was taken aback when James Gunn parted ways with Marvel Studios due to some controversial tweets. However, his subsequent move to DC Studios, where he now stands as Co-CEO alongside Peter Safran, has me more intrigued than ever.
Years back, James Gunn was let go by Marvel Studios when his past tweets with distasteful humor about pedophilia and rape reappeared, leaving many supporters in shock. This decision came as a surprise due to Gunn’s significant contributions in transforming lesser-known characters into successful figures within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and creating a popular franchise around them.
Last year’s blockbuster ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ movie I was deeply immersed in was another triumph and marked the fitting culmination of James Gunn’s journey within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Not long after, I found myself stepping into a fresh adventure as Co-CEO of DC Studios, side by side with Peter Safran.
James Gunn currently has a significant task ahead: constructing a fresh cinematic universe from scratch. He’s taking things back to the basics with less popular characters, specifically ‘Creature Commandos,’ an animated series debuting in December. Although ‘Creature Commandos’ marks the initiation of the DCU, Gunn and Safran view the forthcoming live-action ‘Superman’ movie as the genuine kickoff for this new universe.
In a recent conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn expressed his viewpoint that the DC Universe and ‘Creature Commandos’ could potentially outshine his previous accomplishments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
I’m accustomed to handling unusual individuals and those who deviate from the norm, even the eccentric ones. That’s what Guardians represents, while Creature Commandos can be thought of as a more pragmatic version of Guardians, minus the emotional depth. The Guardians are fundamentally well-rounded characters, but that’s not always true for the creatures.
In addition, Gunn revealed details about the characters we’ll meet in the upcoming release, suggesting a wide variety of unique personality types and characteristics.
Part of the fun for me was taking some of the basics of Mary Shelley’s story and bringing them into this story about the spurned relationship between the Bride and Frankenstein. Frankenstein is this incredibly well-spoken intellectual but is still driven by his rage and his anger and his inability to really be a human being, and the inability for the one that he loves not loving him back. That’s what drives him. […]There’s an innocence to G.I. Robot that I didn’t quite see until Sean stepped into the booth and started creating this character. His choices for G.I. Robot give the character this sweet, mechanic innocence. He’s got this very sad history from World War II. The only time I think he felt at home was with the soldiers that he served with in DC’s alternate history of World War II, where metahumans were involved.
Additionally, the director emphasized that ‘Superman’ would provide a genuine glimpse into the kind of universe we can expect from the DC Universe.
Superman serves as the foundation for all stories; it’s a massive, captivating saga. This abridged version offers a delightful taste for readers, filled with numerous winks and nods to other DC Universe elements, as well as hints about future developments. I believe it’s an incredibly entertaining introduction.
