As a seasoned gamer with decades of comic book movie marathons under my belt, I must say I’m quite intrigued by James Gunn’s approach to the DCU. Skipping origin stories for Superman and Batman might seem like a bold move, but it’s not entirely foreign to me. After all, who needs another retelling of their first donut or bat-cave exploration when we already know them like the back of our hands?
James Gunn is constructing a completely new cinematic world known as the DCU, intended to supplant Snyder’s DCEU – a series that experienced both significant successes and failures.
The DC Universe officially kicks off with the debut of “Creature Commandos” this coming December, but according to Gunn and Safran, the true commencement of the DCU will be the upcoming “Superman” film, slated for release in 2025.
The specific storyline for the upcoming films featuring Superman and Batman in the new DC Universe remains undisclosed. What we do know is that these aren’t tales of their origins; instead, they’re adaptations from comics where these well-known superheroes are already set in their roles.
As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but find it intriguing that James Gunn doesn’t seem to be following the traditional route of classic origin stories for characters like Batman and Superman in the DCU. In his latest conversation on Threads, he shared some insights about this unique approach.

I won’t retell Batman and Superman’s origin stories since they are already widely recognized. Also, please don’t keep Swamp Thing in the shadows. We have officially announced a project involving him, and he is one of the few DC characters with a significant reputation due to iconic comics, successful films, and his own TV show.
James Gunn stated that he’ll bypass the backstories for Batman and Superman, as these tales are widely recognized by most people.
Additionally, he discussed emphasizing characters such as Swamp Thing, highlighting that Swamp Thing boasts exceptional comic books, well-received films, and a television series, thereby playing a significant role in the DC multiverse.
It’s logical not to delve into Superman’s origin story again, given that it has been previously depicted in films such as the 1978 “Superman” and 2013’s “Man of Steel”. Being a widely recognized superhero, his tale is well-known, so rehashing the same narrative seems unnecessary. Similarly, modern movies like “The Batman” and the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s “Spider-Man” trilogy have opted to skip the origin stories for characters such as Batman and Spider-Man.
