James Gunn Explains How ‘Peacemaker’ Season 1 Fits into the New DCU and the Fate of the DCEU’s Justice League

As a devoted fan who’s witnessed the ups and downs of DC’s cinematic universe, I must say, James Gunn’s announcement about Peacemaker Season 2 has got me pretty excited! The fact that it will be canon within the new DCU is a breath of fresh air, and I can’t wait to see how it all fits into the storyline.

James Gunn and Peter Safran are working diligently to establish a fresh DC film universe following the DCEU. Notably, one of the thriving projects set to carry on in this new phase is James Gunn’s “Peacemaker,” which has been confirmed for a second season within the DC Universe.

Gunn clarified that the second season of Peacemaker will align with the larger DC Universe (DCU), promising fans a seamless journey as they navigate the shift from the DCEU to the DCU, avoiding any potential confusion along the way.

As a devoted fan, I can confidently say that James Gunn has reassured us that Peacemaker Season 2 will seamlessly align with the narrative of the new DC Universe. Yet, it’s important to note that the events in Peacemaker Season 1 won’t be recognized as part of the official DCU timeline.

In the case of “Peacemaker” Season 1, some special considerations were given because of its connection to “The Suicide Squad,” specifically the narrative surrounding Rick Flag Jr.’s demise. Previously, Gunn clarified that only specific segments of the former DC Extended Universe would be acknowledged as canon.

Nevertheless, matters grew more intricate as he explained which parts of “Peacemaker” Season 1 aren’t considered canonical. He stated that something isn’t officially part of the new DCU unless it appears in “Creature Commandos” or future works within the DC Universe.

In a conversation with IGN, Gunn clarified that the majority of content preceding “Creature Commandos” won’t form part of the new DC Universe, with only a few exceptions. He stressed that only elements depicted in “Creature Commandos” or future projects within the new DCU will be officially recognized as part of the new continuity.

In the series Creature Commandos, any events mentioned from The Suicide Squad or Peacemaker will be considered as established facts or parts of the storyline.

In “The Suasage Squad,” the character Weasel lived on and subsequently appeared in “Creaturist Commandos.” Here, he teams up with a fresh group managed by Amanda Waller. Additionally, Gunn clarified some uncertainty surrounding a scene from “Peacemaker’s Crew” involving the old Justice League, including Aquawoman and the Flash. He explained that these depictions of the characters stem from an earlier DC universe timeline, rather than the new DC Universe.

Essentially, almost everything shown in Peacemaker aligns with established lore, except for Justice League-related aspects. We’ll tackle that part in the upcoming season of Peacemaker.
