James Gunn Confirms the DCU’s Timeline Is in Release Order… For Now

Despite Creature Commandos being an earlier creation, it’s really James Gunn‘s Superman that marks the beginning of the new DC Universe in earnest. Following Superman, we can expect season 2 of Peacemaker, then Supergirl in 2026, along with Clayface. However, it’s uncertain whether these projects will be presented in chronological order. It’s worth noting that the third Marvel Cinematic Universe film, Captain America: The First Avenger, occurred before Iron Man and Iron Man 2. But according to Gunn, the DCU timeline appears to be mostly linear, with each new film/series following the one that came before it. No unexpected twists or turns, as of now. This information comes from IGN, where Gunn clarified the DCU timeline when a fan asked about it on social media.

Currently, new releases such as ‘Creature Commandos’, ‘Superman’, ‘Peacemaker’, ‘Green Lanterns’ and ‘Supergirl’ are similar to what you see in movies and TV shows. However, do note that some of these include flashbacks.

From a movie enthusiast’s perspective, it seems that “Lanterns” might debut on HBO Max prior to “Supergirl” hitting theaters in June 2026. James Gunn hinted at this by saying “As of now,” suggesting that upcoming DCU projects like the Wonder Woman prequel series “Paradise Lost” could feature stories set in the past, while a potential “Booster Gold” series might delve into the future.

For now, the “DCU Timeline” on HBO Max that might be shown around 2027 will likely just follow the projects as they’re released one after another. We think this is a positive approach, as complex timelines like those in Star Wars, which mix movies and series across different time periods, can often confuse general viewers. It appears that James Gunn shares this view, as he seems to favor a straightforward sequence of events.
