James Gunn Confirms Discussions with NetherRealm and Rocksteady About Developing More DC Games

James Gunn and Peter Safran have affirmed that DC Studios is collaborating with game creators on upcoming video game ventures. They’ve been conversing with Rocksteady and NetherRealm, the studios responsible for the Batman Arkham series and Injustice, about potential future DC games. Though specifics are yet to be revealed, Gunn and Safran highlighted that these games will require considerable time and won’t hit the shelves for several more years.

At a recent press gathering, they discussed their extensive collaboration with Warner Bros. Games. Safran stated, “We have a very close working relationship with JB Perrette, who oversees that division. This is unprecedented at Warner Bros. James and I regularly meet with the heads of the studios under JB’s leadership, such as NetherRealm or Rocksteady. We share ideas about characters and stories that excite us both.

Gunn elaborated that they have a sneak peek at projects from their inception and sometimes suggest ideas for the plotline. As he put it, “We are among the first to view drafts of the projects. We discuss these, we deliberate about possible storylines, and we might propose, ‘Perhaps you should consider this direction because we’re considering a certain character development.’

It’s been a challenging period for gaming in DC, as titles like “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League” have faced both critical and financial hurdles, and “MultiVersus” encountered its own setbacks. The anticipation for “Injustice 3” has lasted almost a decade now, and the reported development cost of the upcoming “Wonder Woman” game is over $100 million without much visible progress so far.

Discussion arose about a planned Flash video game, but it was ultimately scrapped following the underperformance of its live-action movie at the cinema. Likewise, it seems that WB Games Montreal proposed a John Constantine game, yet failed to secure approval for the project.

Even amidst the difficulties, there remain encouraging advancements. It’s whispered that Rocksteady is planning to revisit its solo Batman narrative for its upcoming project. Furthermore, Gunn is advocating for a more integrated DC Universe across films, television, and video games. This could potentially mean that future DCU games will closely mirror the tales being told on the silver screen.

With Gunn and Safran on board, there’s a strong possibility that the future of DC games will be more unified and thrilling. For now, we can only speculate, but let’s hope this collaboration results in more compelling and immersive games featuring our favorite DC superheroes.
