Since James Gunn revealed his initial plans for the DC Universe (DCU) – a series called “Gods and Monsters” – fans have been speculating about who the main villain would be. Now, Gunn has revealed who it won’t be, and some comic book fans might be upset. In interviews with Screen Crush and New Rockstars (reported by Comic Book Movie), Gunn confirmed that Darkseid, a major DC villain, won’t be the primary antagonist. He explained that this decision was partly due to the similarity between Darkseid and Thanos, a well-known villain from Marvel.
Thanos and Darkseid share a lot of similarities, especially in their appearance. Because of this, and considering Zack Snyder already explored Darkseid effectively, and Marvel has Thanos, using Darkseid as the main villain again doesn’t make a lot of sense right now.
James Gunn recognizes that many viewers might see Darkseid as a copy of Thanos, even though in the comics, it was actually Thanos who drew inspiration from Darkseid. However, Gunn clarified that Darkseid could still appear in future projects, as he’s particularly interested in exploring the New Gods. He mentioned this will be a focus of the upcoming animated series, Mister Miracle, which will showcase Darkseid and other characters created by Jack Kirby for his Fourth World saga.
As a huge DC fan, the news about the Mister Miracle show being officially part of the DCU is really exciting – it basically confirms Darkseid will be around! And honestly, it opens the door for a full-blown New Gods project down the line, whether it’s a movie or a series. It’s pretty safe to say Darkseid isn’t going anywhere. That said, I totally agree with James Gunn’s approach of not making him the big bad right away. We need a proper Darkseid story! The guy deserves so much more than the few minutes he got in Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
