As a seasoned gamer and DCU enthusiast who’s been through more reboots than I can count, I must say, this latest twist in the DC Universe is as surprising as a level boss that suddenly appears out of nowhere. It’s like playing a game on “easy mode,” where rules are bent to suit the player. But hey, if it keeps the story fresh and exciting, who am I to complain?
As a game enthusiast, I’m finding myself knee-deep in a puzzle even before the DC Universe has truly taken off. The fresh introductions of new Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, and co. promise a clean slate. However, amidst all this, Peacemaker season two is on the horizon. The first season was a direct extension of Gunn’s Suicide Squad, a movie deeply rooted in the DCEU. You might remember Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, who made her debut in the not-so-great Suicide Squad flick. In essence, it’s less complex than it appears.
James Gunn, currently on promotional rounds for the animated series “Creature Commandos”, has been inundated with this question from various angles. Fortunately for DC Studios and us fans, he has a response. Essentially, anything that transpired in the past will still be relevant, but only if future titles acknowledge them. In simpler terms, it’s referred to as “light canon”. It’s a playful way of saying, “We can use whatever we want, and we appreciate your understanding.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Gunn explained that “Peacemaker” is generally clear-cut, except for a mysterious guest appearance by a certain group towards the end. At this point in time, they don’t actually exist. However, he added that if something from the past is ever mentioned in one of the new DCU shows or movies, then it’s considered to have occurred. This is how they are approaching the potential cameo from the Justice League in season one.
It’s quite logical that Gunn, joining the DCEU at a late stage, significantly filled the gap created by Snyder and Whedon’s impact on the universe. In essence, “The Suicide Squad” was essentially a standalone production within the larger DCEU framework, with characters like Amanda Waller, Harley Quinn, and some unfortunate squad members being the only common threads. The upcoming “Creature Commandos” series follows directly from both “The Suicide Squad” and “Peacemaker” season one. Interestingly, Frank Grillo’s character Rick Flag Sr., father to the Rick Flag who perished in “The Suicide Squad”, will play a significant role in “Peacemaker” season two as well. Lastly, Weasel appears in both “The Suicide Squad” and “Creature Commandos”.
Currently, there’s uncertainty about whether Margot Robbie will continue as Harley Quinn in the DCU or if she’ll be absent from the upcoming “The Suicide Squad.” However, the operation itself, Operation Starfish, seems to be considered “loosely canon” or at least presumably so. Does that make sense?
Rest assured, there’s no need to fret excessively over it. If it matters, it will reveal itself. However, I strongly believe that the original DCEU as we knew it won’t play a significant role anymore, especially parts not directly overseen by Gunn. As for Blue Beetle, it appears that it will still be part of the established universe.
Creature Commandos debuts on Max Thursday December 5.
