James Gunn is learning from Marvel’s setbacks and working diligently to prevent similar occurrences within the DC universe.
Gunn Blames Disney for Marvel’s Decline
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Gunn pointed out that while there have been challenges within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, not all of these issues can be blamed on Marvel itself. He explained that under pressure from Disney, they were required to produce an excessive amount of content.
As a passionate moviegoer, I’d say it like this: “I’ve noticed Marvel Studios has openly admitted their mistakes from the recent past. They’ve been flooding us with too many releases.
Gunn stated that, in private conversations, Marvel producer Louis D’Esposito informed him that the studio was being pressured by higher-ups to produce more films and series than was feasible for them.
As a fellow movie buff, I’ve had some exclusive insights shared with me by Louis D’Esposito, and I must admit, I’m not entirely sure it’s fair to point fingers at them for the current situation.
“That wasn’t fair. It wasn’t right. And it killed them.”

DC Will Do Less — And Better
Gunn emphasized that DC Studios will not tread the same path as Marvel under Disney. He stated that unlike Marvel, which must adhere to certain quotas, each DC project will be viewed as a standalone chance to prove itself and secure its spot.
Our authority doesn’t dictate a specific number of films and series annually. Instead, we aim to release only those productions we believe are exceptional in quality.
He admits not everything will be great, but says the goal is consistency, not volume:
While we’ll undoubtedly engage in both positive and less favorable actions, our aim is for the overall quality to be top-notch throughout.

Quality Over Quantity
The biggest difference? Gunn says nothing at DC gets made without a script he personally approves:
“Nothing goes before there’s a screenplay that I personally am happy with.”
Following the crowded release schedule of Phases 4 and 5 from Marvel, Gunn seems to be wagering that a more streamlined approach could provide a stronger foundation for the DC Universe’s lasting success. Additionally, Gunn has disclosed that he scrapped a DC-approved project.
