James Gunn is altering the course of a series to align with his vision, which may not be historically accurate but given he’s not associated with the Smithsonian or the Presidency, it’s acceptable. Essentially, Gunn has revised a popular show from a universe that had fallen out of favor and integrated it into a fresh one. It’s not groundbreaking news, but it shows intelligence at work. With his impactful creations such as The Suicide Squad and its spin-off Peacemaker, Gunn breathed new life into the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), which was on a decline. As such, it makes sense to disregard the connections to the old DCEU and instead establish links with the revitalized one.
Indeed, this development resulted in one of the most ingeniously rewritten plot points in television lore. Prior to the premiere of Peacemaker season two, episode one, the “previous seasons recap” revealed that the titular protagonist encountered a fresh group of DC Universe characters (Mister Terrific, Superman, Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, and Supergirl), rather than the original DCEU Justice League. Quite clever, as the Bostonians might put it.
Gunn recently addressed those changes in an interview with Rotten Tomatoes. He said:
Peacemaker often found himself in an ambiguous position, not fully integrated into the DCEU as some might think. Instead, he existed within a sort of transitional realm of DC’s universe, a space where continuity was somewhat unclear. This was during a period when there wasn’t yet a clear overseer ensuring all elements were cohesive. It was also a time just before the planned reworking of the entire universe with The Flash.
The storyline allowed us considerable freedom and the dramatic finale was fantastic, one of my favorite aspects of the season, but it seemed inconsistent within the DCEU context. As for Peacemaker and Blue Beetle, there’s not much that needs to be altered for them to fit seamlessly into the DCEU; they seem to blend nicely with just a few minor adjustments through retconning.

As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I can’t help but express my excitement about James Gunn’s new role in the cinematic universe. Given his exceptional body of work, it seems only natural that he’d want to bring some of his finest creations along for the ride. It’s like selecting the best comic book storylines, and let’s face it, that’s what superhero movies are all about!
And guess what? He’s not just confining himself to his own characters. The inclusion of ‘Blue Beetle’ in this universe is a testament to his commitment to expanding the horizons of superheroes on screen. It’s not just about him, it’s about everyone who loves these vibrant, action-packed stories.
In the very same interview, Gunn revealed that the second season of Peacemaker plays a crucial role in the early stages of the DC Universe, much like the characters Superman and Supergirl.

Without a doubt, we’ll observe how everything unfolds, but the DC Universe has made an impressive beginning. Although, as Gunn mentioned, not every forthcoming project will be linked to the main narrative, it’s already taking shape quite well.
