Legendary actor James Earl Jones, famously known as the voice behind Star Wars antagonist Darth Vader and Mufasa from The Lion King, has sadly passed away at the age of 93. The news was confirmed early Monday morning, September 9th, by his agent Barry McPherson in a public statement.

Throughout his career, he earned three Tony Awards, two Emmys, and a Grammy. He was also honored with an Oscar in 2011 for a lifetime of achievements. In 1971, he became the second Black man to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor following Sidney Poitier.

Kevin Costner, who acted alongside Jones in one of the mentioned films, honored the departed actor, expressing, “The deep, resonant voice. The silent power. The warmth he exuded. Rob Minkoff, one of the directors for The Lion King, posted on Instagram: “I’ve just learned that James Earl Jones has passed away. It was an honor to collaborate with him. Crystal Minkoff, wife of The Lion King’s co-director Rob Minkoff, commented, “Farewell, Mr. Jones. You turned a young animator’s aspiration into reality by taking on the role of Mufasa.

Born in Mississippi in January 1931 and known for his voice roles later in life, Jones was unable to speak for most of his childhood because of stammer. He once explained that he developed his well-known gravelly voice while working on how to deal with his condition.

In 1977, Jones first portrayed Darth Vader in Star Wars, followed by The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. He later reappeared as Vader in movies like Rogue One (from the anthology series) and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (part of the sequel trilogy), both released in the 2010s. Although David Prowse wore the villain’s costume and supplied the movements, Jones lent his voice to these later roles.

It’s said that Jones didn’t earn a significant fortune from his role as Darth Vader in the first film, pocketing just $9,000.
