James Cameron Teams Up with Joe Abercrombie to Adapt The Devils for the Big Screen

James Cameron and his production company Lightstorm have recently secured the rights for “The Devils”, a novel penned by Joe Abercrombie. This news was shared on June 2nd, originating from Los Angeles. As per the official statement, Abercrombie will collaborate with Cameron to jointly draft the screenplay.

The novel titled “The Devils” made its debut on May 6th and swiftly achieved massive popularity. It immediately took the top spot on the Sunday Times’ bestseller list in the United Kingdom, while simultaneously ranking fifth on the New York Times’ list in the U.S.

It appears that Cameron finds the project utterly thrilling. He expressed his thoughts by saying, “How do I put it? The Devils are not just sharply witty horror adventures or epic battles between good and evil where it’s hard to tell who is who; they are also a twisted, stylish, alternative-medieval romp. The key to survival seems to be the monsters themselves, and Joe Abercrombie has truly outdone himself by creating a whole new world and a set of captivating characters.

Moreover, he noted, “The plot unfolds swiftly, resembling a fast-paced rollercoaster ride, and is infused with Joe’s unique sharp humor and flair. The Devils portrays Joe’s cynical perspective of human nature, revealing its ugly, self-centered aspects, primarily through unlikely characters. Yet, as always, Joe leaves traces of potential redemption that make it captivating – and in the end, surprisingly poignant.

Cameron has shared that he’s had a fondness for Abercrombie’s works for quite some time now, with novels such as “Best Served Cold” and the “Age of Madness” trilogy being particular favorites of his.

He revealed that it was Joe Abercrombie who ultimately persuaded him to acquire the rights and collaborate on the project. “I’m eagerly anticipating the writing process with him,” he stated, adding that, although he believes the adaptation will essentially write itself due to Joe’s highly visual writing style that often resembles scenes and has a very cinematic structure. “I can hardly wait to dive into this as I wrap up Avatar: Fire and Ash,” he continued, expressing his excitement for a fresh challenge in bringing these unforgettable characters to life.

Apart from expressing his own enthusiasm, Abercrombie stated: “For more than four decades, James Cameron has been captivating viewers like me by turning the unattainable into reality on film. No one else can seamlessly blend jaw-dropping action and visual splendor with deeply emotional personal narratives as he does. I can’t conceive of a more suitable individual to adapt this peculiar and fascinating monster of a book for the silver screen.
