James Cameron Shares the One Sci Fi Movie That Shaped a Generation of Directors

The movie The Terminator really changed the science fiction genre. Before it came out, sci-fi films were usually either thoughtful and slow-paced, or cheap and action-packed.

James Cameron’s film broke that mold by combining a complicated, thought-provoking story with the excitement and visual flair of a big-budget Hollywood hit.

It showed studios that audiences would embrace complex time-travel plots if they were delivered with thrilling action and impressive special effects.

Even director James Cameron, known for his innovative vision, draws inspiration from other works. He recently told Vulture that Ridley Scott’s 1979 film Alien had a profound impact on him, influencing not only countless artists but also his own approach to filmmaking.

Cameron observed that the Alien series has evolved in many different ways over the years, but the original film’s influence remains unmatched. He praised Ridley Scott for inspiring generations of fans and filmmakers, explaining that many subsequent projects – including his own 1986 film, Aliens – clearly reflect Scott’s style.

Cameron felt a strong personal connection to the material and approached Aliens as a devoted fan, aiming to honor the original while also adding his own creative touch. Although his sequel is widely considered to be as good as the first film, he’s more critical of the later installments.

He’s acknowledged that the series hasn’t always benefited from its continued expansion, suggesting that the core concept – the blend of psychological themes and mechanical creatures – may have run its course. After seeing that aesthetic copied in countless horror movies since the late 1970s, he’s questioned whether there’s still a need to continue the Alien story.

Although James Cameron doubts the Alien franchise will last, he remains a devoted fan of director Ridley Scott. He says he’ll always be first in line to see a Scott film, no matter what critics say, because he considers Scott a true artist and a source of constant learning.

This professional respect continues even as both directors are currently working on major, career-defining projects. Both are enjoying a very productive period right now.

James Cameron is currently celebrating the huge success of Avatar: Fire and Ash, which came out in late 2025 and has already earned over $1.4 billion worldwide. He’s also releasing a 3D concert documentary, Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard and Soft – The Tour, in May – his first non-fiction film in over twenty years.

Ridley Scott continues to be very productive. Following the 2024 release of Gladiator II, which performed well on Paramount+, he’s now getting ready to launch The Dog Stars in August. This new film, a science fiction story set after a global catastrophe, stars Jacob Elordi and Josh Brolin.
