James Cameron recently revealed more information about his next movie, Avatar: Fire and Ash, which is the third film in the Avatar series.
This film is a sequel to Avatar: The Way of Water, which was released in 2022, and is scheduled to be shown in US cinemas on December 19, 2025.
Cameron, who worked on the screenplay with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, has stated the movie will be approximately three hours long. “And we’ve reached three hours, as many expected! But it flows really well, and the cast was very enthusiastic about it. They felt it was the right length,” he shared with Variety.
He also mentioned that he’s been carefully watching the film again to ensure the music fits the scenes and enhances the dialogue. “I’ve rewatched it, and it’s actually quite enjoyable!”
This movie was a very long project. James Cameron initially talked about making sequels way back in 2006, and by 2010, plans for several follow-up films were publicly announced. Shooting for Fire and Ash started in New Zealand in September 2017 and continued until December 2020, running at the same time as work on The Way of Water. Although the film experienced multiple delays, production is now finished, and the visual effects have been finalized over the last two years.
The world of Avatar is far more complex than you might think. Check out the new trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash and see it in theaters on December 19th.
Plus, you can experience Avatar: The Way of Water back in 3D on the big screen for just one week, beginning October 3rd.

Viewers will see returning stars like Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Stephen Lang, Sigourney Weaver, Kate Winslet, and CCH Pounder. The narrative picks up where it left off, following the characters’ journeys on Pandora. Plus, two more films, Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, are already scheduled to be released in 2029 and 2031.
