During a recent interview with Stephen Colbert, director James Cameron quickly named his favorite action and Christmas movies.
Cameron confidently stated, “I know this one – it’s Die Hard. It has the best one-liner, the best villain death, and it’s the ultimate Christmas movie.”
Since it first came out, Die Hard has gained recognition and is now widely considered a classic, ranking among the greatest action movies of all time.
Die Hard remains popular partly because its hero, John McClane, played by Bruce Willis, feels real – he’s not a perfect, superhuman action figure like many of the heroes from that era. Beyond the action, the film also explores interesting ideas about what it means to be a man, the desire for revenge, traditional gender roles, and anxieties Americans had about outside forces.
The film is often considered a Christmas movie because it’s set during the holidays. The story unfolds at a festive office Christmas party, filled with decorations and music. While the plot is full of action, many viewers and critics believe it still feels appropriate for the Christmas season, even though it’s not a typical holiday story.
James Cameron says DIE HARD is his all-time favorite action film and believes it’s the best Christmas movie ever made.

Even though some people question if action movies fit the holiday theme, Die Hard is considered a Christmas classic by many, and Cameron seems to share that opinion.
