James Cameron Hints ‘Avatar’ 4 and 5 May Never Happen

I was listening to James Cameron on Matthew Belloni’s podcast, and honestly, I didn’t come away feeling super confident about how things are going with the future of Avatar. He seemed a little unsure, which is a bit worrying as a fan!

He admitted to being worried about how well “Avatar: Fire and Ash” would do in theaters, citing challenges the movie theater industry is facing in 2025. Cameron specifically mentioned a potential issue he called “sequelitis” – the tendency for audiences to become less interested in sequels.

In an interview, he explained that sequels often struggle to attract an audience, unless they’re part of a widely beloved series like The Lord of the Rings, where fans are invested in seeing the story conclude. He believes this film represents the satisfying end to a long-running storyline, though he acknowledges the public might not share that view.

Cameron noted that streaming services and the pandemic have altered how people watch movies. He explained that theaters are currently attracting only about 75% of the audience they had before 2020, which makes it more challenging for blockbuster films to achieve their previous levels of success.

When asked about the budget for Avatar: Fire and Ash, James Cameron didn’t reveal the exact amount. However, he emphasized the film’s enormous cost, stating they needed to earn twice as much money as it cost just to break even.

He thought the movie would be profitable, but the key issue was whether it would earn enough to warrant further installments. As he put it, “Will it make enough money to make a sequel worthwhile?”

Avatar: Fire and Ash is the third installment in the Avatar film series. Directed by James Cameron, the screenplay was co-written with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, building upon a story they created with Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno. Lightstorm Entertainment produced the film, which will be distributed by 20th Century Studios. The movie brings back many of the original cast members, including Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, and Stephen Lang.

James Cameron began planning to continue the story of Avatar shortly after the first film’s release in 2009. He initially announced two sequels in early 2010, but the scope of the project grew significantly. Developing new technology for underwater motion capture, along with the writing and production process, took more time than anticipated. Both Avatar: Fire and Ash and Avatar: The Way of Water were filmed simultaneously in New Zealand, beginning in 2017 and wrapping up in late 2020.
