James Cameron recently revealed more information about his upcoming movie, Avatar: Fire and Ash, stating that it will conclude the original Avatar story.
The director told io9 that the first three Avatar movies tell one complete story, while the two upcoming films will tell a different, standalone story.
Cameron explained that he doesn’t see Fire and Ash as simply a sequel, but rather as the satisfying conclusion to a long-running story. He prefers the term ‘saga’ because the groundwork for the ending was laid in the original story’s design, viewing it as the final act of a three-part narrative.
He explained that this project differs from most Hollywood sequels, which often rush into production without a solid story. He described it as a long-term plan, stating he believed audiences would connect with the characters – even though they’re fantastical creatures – and invest in their journey. He said, “It’s a long game. And I went into it knowing that we’d be playing a long game and betting the audience would come along with us and care about these people. Because they may be 10 feet tall and blue, but they’re people.”
Prepare to dive into a world beyond your wildest dreams! Check out the new trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash, coming to theaters December 19th.
Plus, you can experience Avatar: The Way of Water in 3D on the big screen again for one week only, starting October 3rd.

Cameron stated that the planned releases for Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 – in 2029 and 2031, respectively – are still on the books, though he admitted they aren’t certain to happen. He described the later films as a complete story with a beginning, middle, and end, but added that, as of now, they’re just ideas being developed – not fully confirmed projects.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding future installments, the cast is enthusiastic about continuing the story. Jack Champion, who plays Spider, expressed his hope to io9 that they’ll be able to make sequels, saying the story is too compelling to leave unfinished. Trinity Bliss, who plays Tuk, simply stated that the story “goes to the next level.”
Cameron has stated that Avatar: Fire and Ash will be a significant moment for the Avatar series, essentially wrapping up the story that was originally planned. While it’s not definite if there will be another saga, fans will likely have to wait a while to find out what happens next on Pandora.
