This past week, Amazon MGM Studios seized full creative authority over the James Bond series from long-standing producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli. This development came as a shock to many, including Timothy Dalton, who played the iconic role of 007 in the 1987 film The Living Daylights and its sequel Licence to Kill (1989).
In a conversation with Radio Times, Dalton expressed his views about this significant shift happening within the Bond series.
He expressed deep astonishment and disbelief,” he stated. Praising Barbara as an exceptional woman and an outstanding producer, Dalton reminisced about collaborating with her father, Cubby Broccoli, and sharing a harmonious relationship with him.
He served as a solid and robust foundation for the project, Dalton pointed out. It was confirmed that nothing got into the movie without Cubby’s seal of approval. The actor from Jane Eyre shared his sorrow over the loss of the visionary producer and cherished friend, who passed away on June 27, 1996.
Dalton stated that the franchise was effectively managed under Cubby’s guidance, but unfortunately, this is no longer true. Nevertheless, the actor continues to express warm feelings towards the franchise. Despite the various changes in direction over the years, each film has maintained the core spirit of the initial productions.
He expressed his hope that Amazon would take note of that and provide us with movies that have brought joy and amusement to countless individuals, as he concluded his statement. Dalton extended his congratulations to the studio and wished them all the success in their endeavors.
He concluded his speech with a light-hearted comment, stating that the studio will certainly strive to earn profits from the franchise, yet he wishes they put in equal effort to create quality films instead.
Previously, Dalton wasn’t alone in expressing opinions about Amazon MGM’s acquisition. Similarly, Daniel Craig voiced his thoughts on the matter. In an interview with Variety, he expressed his hope to collaborate with Barbara and Michael on various ventures and wished them a peaceful, prolonged retirement.
