Following the tragic deaths of actor and director Rob Reiner and his wife, musician Jack White publicly condemned Donald Trump. Trump had made contentious statements after the news broke. Police are investigating the deaths as a possible homicide, and the couple’s son, Nick Reiner, has been taken into custody.
Jack White publicly criticized Donald Trump on Instagram, responding to a post Trump made on Truth Social. White called Trump a “disgusting, vile, egomaniac loser, child” in his post.
As a critic, I’m frankly appalled. To exploit the tragic passing of a gifted artist for personal gain and to push a divisive, authoritarian agenda is deeply offensive. It’s a cynical and self-absorbed act, and frankly, I’m disgusted that anyone would defend it. This isn’t just bad taste, it’s a moral failing.

Trump acknowledged the passing of Rob Reiner, but his post quickly turned to what many saw as blaming Reiner for his own death. Trump claimed Reiner’s death was connected to what he called “TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME” – a term he used to describe the anger he believed some people felt towards him.
He went on to discuss his strong dislike of President Donald Trump, and spoke of what he considered a past “Golden Age of America.” He finished by offering a message of remembrance, saying, “May Rob and Michele rest in peace.”
Rob Reiner wasn’t afraid to share his political opinions, and this often came through in his films. Movies like A Few Good Men, The American President, Shock and Awe, and LBJ all tackled political themes, prompting viewers to think about the bigger consequences of those in power and the choices governments make.
During a May interview with Rolling Stone, Rob Reiner strongly criticized Donald Trump, accusing him of attempting to establish an autocratic government. Reiner also stated that Trump would ultimately fail in this effort, as he believes Trump has consistently failed throughout his life due to incompetence.
At the end of his Instagram post, White paid tribute to Rob Reiner, writing, “God bless you, Rob Reiner, and thank you for everything you brought to the world.” He added, “Even though I never met you, I still support you.”
Many people, including White, were offended by Trump’s remarks, seeing them as disrespectful to Rob Reiner and his career. Online, the conversation has largely centered on celebrating Reiner’s accomplishments and the significant influence he’s had on filmmaking.
