The film titled “Novocaine” is remarkably simple to explain, yet it leaves one utterly bewildered. It’s an amusing yet poorly executed production. Not in the delightfully cheesy B-movie sense, but rather it lacks quality, as if it were not intended to be good. How can a film that entertains also fall short? How can something enjoyable simultaneously reek? This is because although each individual scene is commendable – and Jack Quaid’s performance is exceptional – the scenes themselves don’t coalesce. In essence, “Novocaine” is a chaotic blend of various genres that fail to harmonize, resulting in a movie that struggles with its identity, purpose, and motivation.
The preview for the movie “Novocaine” suggests it’s a blend of action and comedy, and at times, it certainly lives up to that description. However, the initial 15 minutes offer a deep, engaging, and well-crafted dramatic exploration on pain and the emotional scars we carry. This is due to the film’s thoughtful reflection on its theme. The story revolves around Jack Quaid’s character, Nate Caine, who lacks the ability to feel physical pain because of a genetic condition. His life without pain is ironically painful, as he’s almost completely isolated from others and cannot even enjoy regular food. However, his perspective seems to shift when he encounters Amber Midthunder’s character, Sherry, who also delivers an impressive performance in the film.
The blossoming romance in the film transformed it into a romantic comedy, which I found enjoyable. If only the movie Novocaine had kept focusing on their relationship, I would have appreciated it even more.
Initially, the film takes an unexpected turn, morphing into something akin to “Heat.” It’s not a comical version of “Heat,” rather, it transforms into a serious heist movie with the weight and intensity of a Michael Mann production. It’s quite impressive, especially the well-executed bank robbery scene. However, it’s also jarring and seems nonsensical because within half an hour, three distinct genres are introduced, but they don’t seem to connect or interact with each other. Instead of a harmonious blend of ideas, it’s more like eating a meal where tuna fish, pistachio pudding, and brie don’t complement one another. Each component can be enjoyed individually, but not together in the same bite.
Later on, things become quite peculiar as Novocaine, initially marketed as an action-comedy, struggles to maintain a consistent tone. It veers from being an offbeat comedy in some instances, a dark comedy in others, and even incorporates conventional humor at times. These sudden changes in the film’s comedic approach lead to a disorienting sensation similar to a quick whiplash.
The consistent standout element in the film is none other than Quaid, and it’s clear to see why directors Dan Berk and Robert Olsen sought him out. Nate, much like Quaid’s character Hughie from The Boys, possesses many similar qualities. They are both gentle, down-to-earth individuals who find themselves in peculiar predicaments. In this instance, it occurs when Nate chases after the bank robbers to rescue Sherry. This spontaneous action forces him to employ his unique condition as a sort of superpower, leading to much of the film’s physical comedy.
Nate isn’t merely Hughie reincarnated in another tale; Quaid significantly transforms Nate into his unique portrayal. He exudes a softer, more distinctly sorrowful demeanor and carries an aloof indifference that seems fitting for someone who has spent life isolated from danger. Even though the characters share some striking similarities, I didn’t once think of “The Boys” during the movie. Quaid delivers a captivating leading performance by fully immersing himself in the role.
Despite the diverse genres and fluctuating tones not being fully harmonious in the movie, it nevertheless offers Quaid an opportunity to exhibit his versatility as an actor. He flawlessly transitions between each genre, making the film engaging and intriguing. His portrayal is remarkable whether Novocaine is a drama, romantic comedy, heist thriller, action movie, or one of several comedies. Without his performance, the film could be quite unbearable to watch. Yet with him, every scene becomes captivating and thought-provoking.
It’s really unfortunate that all these parts don’t add up to a coherent or fulfilling storyline. The movie Novocaine seems confused about its identity and purpose. The plot seems disjointed, as if random events were strung together without regard for making sense. It embodies the phrase, “The whole is less than the sum of its parts.
Although it’s not an extremely unpleasant movie-watching experience, it certainly doesn’t leave you feeling great overall.
