Jack O’Connell Discusses His ’28 Years Later’ Character: “He’s a gas cunt”

Once again, Jack O’Connell graces our screens, but this time he ventures into an apocalyptic world. Known primarily for portraying tough and rebellious characters, this British thespian is stepping into uncharted territory with his role in “28 Years Later“, the forthcoming installment in the renowned zombie horror franchise.

You could recall O’Connell from his time on the show Skins, or from movies like Unbroken and ’71. At 34 years old, this BAFTA winner is venturing into more ominous realms. In the film 28 Years Later, he portrays a peculiar and potent individual named Sir Jimmy Crystal, or as he humorously put it, “Sir Lord Jimmy Crystal” – a character he describes as a “real jerk” with a chuckle.

From what we gather so far about Sir Jimmy, he appears to be an enigmatic character, hinted at being potentially sinister or even dangerous by O’Connell. Gossip points towards him possibly leading a cult, a person who could pervert optimism into something frightening amidst the infected populace. O’Connell expresses that this role is unlike anything he’s tackled before, and it seems to excite him greatly.

In a recent conversation, O’Connell confessed that he hasn’t figured out the perfect words to explain the character yet, but it was a captivating experience bringing him to life on screen.

The “28 Days Later” series started with the 2002 debut film directed by Danny Boyle, which was followed by “28 Weeks Later” in 2007. After almost two decades, a new installment titled “28 Years Later” is set to continue the story. The original creative team from the first movie, including director Danny Boyle, writer Alex Garland, and cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle, are returning for this sequel. Cillian Murphy, who played a leading role in the initial film, has now moved on to producing duties.

Twenty-eight years have passed since the initial outbreak of the Rage virus, and now the narrative unfolds in this timeframe. A handful of survivors inhabit a secluded island, shielded from the chaos that has taken over the world. Accessible to the island is possible only via a strictly monitored route.

The film chronicles a father and his child as they depart from their island home, venturing into a perilous realm offshore. Their journey uncovers a blend of mysteries, peculiar locales, and heart-stopping experiences.

The movie was simultaneously produced with its subsequent installment, titled “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple“, set for release in the future.
