Jack Gleeson, famous for playing the villainous King Joffrey on Game of Thrones, has clarified that he didn’t stop acting because of negative reactions from fans. At the premiere of his new show, House of Guinness, he explained that the rumors about fan backlash leading to his departure from acting aren’t true.
I was really relieved that any negative reactions I got weren’t actually directed *at* me personally – thankfully! I know it happens, sadly, where people can’t separate the character from the actor. But honestly, even while *Game of Thrones* was airing, and definitely afterwards, I was more focused on theatre. I’d started a company with some friends back in Dublin, and that’s where my real passion was at the time.
Jack Gleeson quickly became well-known – and disliked – for his role as Joffrey. Viewers often felt intense anger towards the character, and sometimes, that negativity extended to how people interacted with Gleeson himself in real life.
He’s shared before that people often reacted strongly to him in public, sometimes yelling or avoiding him, because they connected him with the villainous king he portrayed. However, Gleeson maintains that these strong reactions never made him want to stop acting.
He said he really enjoyed acting in movies and TV, and that’s what eventually drew him back into the entertainment industry. After finishing *Game of Thrones*, Gleeson stepped away from big, well-known roles to concentrate on theater work in Dublin. He preferred these smaller, more intimate settings where he could focus on his acting without the pressures of being famous worldwide.
With his new role in *House of Guinness*, Gleeson is back to acting, putting the character of Joffrey behind him. He clarifies that his break from acting was a personal decision, and he remains dedicated to the art of acting itself, rather than the attention it brings.
