As a devoted follower of Jesse Eisenberg’s career, I can empathize with his struggles and appreciate his candidness about them. His experiences in high-profile projects like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and The End of the Tour have undeniably left an indelible mark on him, both professionally and personally.
As a devoted admirer of film, I took on the role of Lex Luthor, Superman’s arch-nemesis, in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016). Reflecting upon my portrayal, I can’t help but feel that it was met with less than favorable reception and may have significantly influenced my career trajectory.
2016 film debutant Eisenberg, known for portraying the antagonist, a shrewd entrepreneur and genius scientist, shared insights from his role in an interview on the Armchair Expert podcast hosted by Dax Shepherd.
As a lifestyle expert looking back on my past, I must confess that my role in the Batman film was not met with the warmest reception. Admittedly, the movie’s performance was less than stellar, and so was my own portrayal within it. To be candid, this experience has had a tangible impact on my career trajectory, one that I find somewhat embarrassing to acknowledge.
Eisenberg acknowledged that his involvement in a movie that received unfavorable reviews on a large scale also negatively impacted him on a personal level. Despite having worked on other projects that didn’t succeed, the negative response to Batman v Superman resonated more due to its wider distribution.
If an actor delivers a lackluster performance in a massive blockbuster movie, it’s unlikely that filmmakers will consider them for future projects, as expressed by the actor themselves. Nevertheless, Eisenberg remains thankful for having collaborated with director Zack Snyder despite the film’s underwhelming reception.
In an interview, the actor from The Social Network acknowledged his affection for the movie and his character. However, he persistently expressed self-criticism about his portrayal of Lex Luthor not resonating with fans. He put it this way: “I’m not saying ‘they wronged me,’ but more like, ‘I must have messed up there.’ It was as if I had to start over again,” he explained.
One significant project that left a lasting impression on Eisenberg was the 2015 dramatic film “The End of the Tour.” In an interview with GQ Magazine, he shared his experience making the movie, disclosing that it stirred up powerful feelings that had a profound effect on his psychological well-being.
In the movie, Lipsky’s character was a person prone to envy and intense jealousy towards the author he interacted with. This aspect of the role made the actor uneasy and emotional to play out. Eisenberg revealed that he couldn’t quite put his finger on it, but the part seemed to resonate with aspects of his own life, frequently causing him to shed tears while filming.
During those emotional scenes, I just couldn’t hold back my tears. Then, surprisingly, the director asked me to refrain from crying on set.” He shared this with the media at that point in time.
