‘Its Glitz And Glamour’: Paul Mescal, Connie Neilsen, And Denzel Washington Heap Praises On Gladiator II Director Ridley Scott

As an ardent film enthusiast with a penchant for epic historical dramas, I must say that the upcoming Gladiator II has me absolutely thrilled! The cast members’ experiences working with director Ridley Scott have only fueled my anticipation.

The actors involved in Gladiator II praised director Ridley Scott for his work on their upcoming film. Paul Mescal, Connie Nielsen, and Denzel Washington openly discussed their experiences collaborating with Scott during the production of the sequel to the franchise, which will be released 24 years after the original movie premiered in cinemas.

On the evening of Friday’s movie screening, the performers engaged with the viewers and showered compliments upon the absent filmmaker.

As Paul Mescal, set to embody Lucius Virus on the big screen, I must express my admiration for Scott’s extraordinary directing abilities. In just nine days, he masterfully captured the grandeur of war-torn Rome – a feat I haven’t seen another director achieve. Speaking to you all at the screening, I couldn’t help but exclaim, “I can’t fathom that we filmed it over nine days; I don’t believe there’s any other director who could pull this off.

Additionally, Mescal mentioned that the director would always reassure him when he felt anxious prior to filming crucial scenes.

In the meantime, Washington, set to play Macrinus again, noted that Scott created a comfortable atmosphere on set, allowing the actors to simply converse when the camera was rolling.

The well-known actor explained that playing his role was similar to someone constructing Rome, all he had to do was slip into the costumes and begin acting. He went on to say that it was a form of play, something enjoyable. Essentially, he saw it as simply putting on the necessary props and going about his business. In essence, he was donning this dress, these accessories, and letting his imagination run wild.

During the ongoing discussion, Nielsen discussed her recent collaboration with new cast members and reunion with director Scott, who they hadn’t worked with since 24 years ago. Notably, she will be wearing the costume of Lucilla for the first time since Gladiator (released in 2000).

24 years ago versus today, Nielsen noted a significant difference in the setup time for the seats – it once took 3 hours but now requires just 20 minutes. This speed in setting up left her astonished at the rapid pace of filming progress.

In addition to participating in the Q&A session following the film screening, Fred Hechinger referred to the director as “rotten gold.” He went on to say, “There’s a surface shine, but there’s a real illness underneath.” Regarding his character in the movie, he mentioned, “Over time, some parts developed naturally, while others were already fully formed—such as the monkey.

Gladiator II will hit theaters on November 15.
