As a seasoned gamer with decades of comic book and superhero series under my belt, I must say that these recent casting announcements for the upcoming Green Lantern series have left me both excited and a tad skeptical.
It’s worth mentioning that if you haven’t heard the latest, the DCU has recently cast their version of Hal Jordan, primarily for the Lanterns series, and potentially other projects as well. The top contender for this role was Josh Brolin, but there were also whispers about Ewan McGregor, Timothy Olyphant, and Chris Pine being in the running. However, it’s now confirmed that Kyle Chandler will be taking on the part, a decision that has sparked some disagreement among fans.
Concurrently, there’s been a buzz surrounding who might portray John Stewart, our second Green Lantern in the show, and also the main character. Many names have cropped up in the whispers we’ve covered, but it appears a choice has been made.
It’s been announced that Aaron Pierre is set to portray John Stewart on HBO, following his acclaimed role in Netflix’s “Rebel Ridge”. The network appears to have secured a significant acquisition for the upcoming series.
It’s clear that John Stewart will be the main character throughout the entire series, but surprisingly, there’s been little excitement about this character or the actor portraying him in the show. Although we hypothesized about various possible explanations, it remains a fact.
Recently, we shared that well-known source DanielRPK suggested Kelvin Harrison Jr. might be the front-runner for a role, marking our first substantial rumor. However, since then, there’s been increased chatter until today, when we received the long-awaited confirmation: Aaron Pierre has been cast as John Stewart in the series!
Pierre has recently taken on the role of an ex-Marine in Netflix’s action movie “Rebel Ridge,” and later this year, you can hear his voice as a young Mufasa in Disney’s prequel film to “The Lion King.” Some other notable performances include appearances in Amazon’s series “Underground Railroad,” the independent film “Foe,” M. Night Shyamalan’s movie “Old,” National Geographic’s series “Genius: MLK/X” (where he played Malcolm X), and Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show.
Given the enthusiasm of many fans for Pierre to play a role, it’s likely that those eagerly anticipating the series will rejoice at this news, as it promises to create quite a stir in the entertainment world. By bringing on such a well-known and beloved figure, HBO and DC Universe suggest they have grand ambitions for the character, making the upcoming developments an exciting prospect to keep tabs on.
