‘It’s Called Entertainment’: Kristin Chenoweth Slams Right-Wing Group One Million Moms For Its Accusations Against 2024 Wicked

As a dedicated theater enthusiast and someone who had the privilege of originating the role of Glinda in the original stage adaptation of Wicked, I find it disheartening to see groups like One Million Moms trying to spread hate and misinformation about this incredible production.

The 2024 movie version of the popular Broadway musical Wicked was praised by both critics and audiences. But a conservative organization named One Million Moms criticized the film for allegedly promoting the LGBTQ+ agenda to families, especially children, according to Out Magazine.

The group signed a petition to boycott the film, but actress Kristin Chenoweth, who played Glinda in the original stage adaptation, defended it. She slammed the group by commenting on Out Magazine’s Instagram post, calling out their intention to “spew hate.”

The petition stated that the musical contained an excessive amount of magic and spellcasting, potentially leading parents to forbid their children from attending the movies. Additionally, it suggested that subtle cross-dressing scenes and romantic entanglements between men might come as a shock and convey a negative impression to both parents and children.

Further, the petition emphasized that Wicked is “a dark movie that also pushes wokeness.”

The actress refused to ignore unwarranted hostility and appropriately spoke against it, saying “It’s called entertainment. Artistry.” She identified herself as a Christian woman who originated the role of Glinda, commenting that the nonsense these women produce is born out of hate. She further stated, “No no no. I can’t help it [not to respond].

Later on, Chenoweth commended the most recent adaptation of the Wicked musical, which bears a loose resemblance to Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel of the same name and features Ariana Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba. In her opinion, “If you’re looking for a display of girl power, then head on over to WICKED. Whether it’s on stage or in a cinema,” the original Glinda actress recommended.

Various spectators and media platforms have noted the movie’s LGBTQ undertones, and actresses Grande and Erivo haven’t refuted these claims. When discussions about their on-screen connection sparked online interest, Grande expressed agreement with the idea that her character might be somewhat closeted in an interview with Gay Times.

Chenoweth agreed with the viewpoint of the Positions singer and left a comment under the post saying, “I felt the same way years ago…” Regarding the narrative in the source, it primarily explores the strong bond between Glinda and Elphaba, characters who even share a kiss at one point in the book.

Wicked is now available in theaters.
