‘It’s As Good As First One’: Ridley Scott Compares Gladiator II To The Original Oscar-Winning Film

As a die-hard fan of the original Gladiator, I have to say that Ridley Scott‘s claim about Gladiator II being “as good as the first one” has me on the edge of my seat! Having grown up with Maximus and his unforgettable story, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and trepidation. The original film was not just a movie, it was an experience that resonated deeply within me, and any attempt to recapture that magic is a daunting task.

Ridley Scott expresses confidence about his upcoming sequel to the 2000’s Academy Award-winning movie, Gladiator. During the Alien: Romulus premiere on August 12, he spoke with PEOPLE and stated that Gladiator II is “just as good” as the original film, though he did not claim it as superior.

In 2001, the initial movie garnered five Academy Awards at the Oscars, among them being Best Picture and Best Actor for a Leading Role. The captivating portrayal of Maximus, the noble and sorrowful hero, not just earned an Academy Award but also touched countless hearts, thanks to Russell Crowe’s performance.

In a cruel twist of fate, Maximus is compelled into servitude and combat in the infamous arena under the tyrannical rule of Emperor Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix). Despite this, he rises through the ranks, transforming from a slave to a Gladiator, driven by a thirst for vengeance against Commodus, who brutally murdered his family. Tragically, even after achieving his goal, Maximus succumbs to his wounds following his fight with Commodus. Rather than ascending to the position of Rome’s emperor, as planned by Marcus Aurelius, he breathes his last on the blood-soaked arena floor.

In the next installment, we follow Lucius (played by Paul Mescal), the grandson of Aurelius and son of Lucilla. He is oblivious to his royal lineage and admires Maximus for his heroic battles. The plot summary goes like this: “When Rome falls under the rule of ruthless emperors, Lucius is compelled to join the Colosseum. To regain Rome’s former glory, he must delve into his past to discover the courage needed.”

In November, Scott, who directed both the original and sequel movies, discussed with Deadline his reason for wanting to alter a story that was already “fulfilling” and “artistically concluded.” He revealed that the initial film depicted one stage of the period, but the events have been recurring for the past 20 years. “It gradually became clear that it would be an obvious choice to continue the narrative, and that’s how the story progressed,” he explained further.

As a lifestyle expert, I’m thrilled to share that in addition to the captivating performance of Normal People’s breakout star Mescal, the upcoming sequel boasts an impressive ensemble. Among them is Pedro Pascal, who takes on the role of General Marcus Acacius, while the legendary Denzel Washington portrays Macrinus. Joseph Quinn steps into the character of Emperor L’imperatore Caracalla, and returning to the cast is Connie Nielsen as Lucilla, with many more talented individuals joining this star-studded production.

Gladiator II will be released on November 15, 2024.
