Throughout the show’s run, the event that resulted in Ben Hargreeves’s demise was often alluded to but not fully explained, with references made to it as “The Jennifer Incident.” This mystery only served to pique the audience’s interest. However, in the final season, the truth behind this incident is finally revealed!
As a devoted fan, I followed Ben, portrayed by Justin H. Min, throughout the series as a ghost closely tied to Robert Sheehan’s character Klaus. In the climactic final season, my character underwent a transformation, embodying an alternate version who experienced a parallel fate. This revelation finally unveiled the mystery that had been shrouding the show since its inception.
The incident took place after Ben met Jennifer (Victoria Sawal), a woman created by Durango. Since Durango and Marigold (what created Ben) can not mix, it creates a severe reaction that could have swallowed the timeline.
Following the tragic encounter between Ben and Jennifer, their chances of survival seemed bleak without causing worldwide destruction. Therefore, Reginald made the heartrending decision to let his adopted son perish and erased the memories of the incident from the minds of his other children. The death of Ben ultimately led to the dissolution of the initial Umbrella Academy, while it was only upon Reginald Hargreeves’ demise that the siblings came back together again.
As a writer who has spent years crafting stories and bringing characters to life, I find it fascinating when real-life events seem to mirror the narratives we create. In my own journey as a storyteller, I have often found myself in situations where the plot twists of my stories appear to be playing out in reality.
It turns out that neither the actor nor his co-stars were aware of Ben’s shocking and sad demise; it wasn’t until just a couple of months prior to filming for season four that they found out about it. Fans often presume that actors are privy to their characters’ endings, but in this case, they were not informed until close to the start of production.
In his conversation with PEOPLE, he expressed that it’s an equally thrilling revelation for us and for the fans alike. He reminisced about reading the screenplay for the climactic battle, a moment that left him stunned. “I was in my apartment in Toronto, completely taken aback, but incredibly delighted to finally unveil this secret,” he concluded.
