As a long-time fan and follower of the intriguing world of The Umbrella Academy, I must admit that the heart-wrenching ending of season 4 has left me both saddened and intrigued. Having spent countless hours immersed in this peculiar family’s adventures, I find myself torn between the bitter pill of saying goodbye to beloved characters like Ben Hargreeves and Allison Hargreeves, and the sweet anticipation of unraveling the mysteries that lie ahead.
Spoilers ahead for The Umbrella Academy season 4!
In a chat with PEOPLE, members of The Umbrella Academy’s cast, including Justin H. Min (Ben Hargreeves) and Emmy Raver-Lampman (Allison Hargreeves), discussed the selfless actions their characters took in the season 4 finale.
Instead of being devoured by The Cleanse to eliminate interconnected and convoluted timelines, the superhero siblings chose to be absorbed. This act caused them to vanish from all historical records, leaving an illusion that they had never been part of history at all. This bittersweet conclusion left fans who adored those characters feeling a mix of sadness and nostalgia.
In the world of The Umbrella Academy, everything is plausible. Could these characters reappear at some point, or has their story reached its conclusion? Min suggests that “this is a concluded storyline, a self-contained sequence. It was the necessary sacrifice for the academy and the world to attain normalcy.”
Min hinted that there might be future spinoffs of the show, suggesting that certain characters like Klaus and Robbie (Sheehan) could star in their own comics, while Aidan might enjoy a storyline focused on Five. However, he remained tight-lipped about any concrete plans.
The actor affirmed that regardless of the fate of the characters, he’ll be tuning in to any spin-offs within the superhero world.
In the meantime, Lampman commented on the ending as a compromise for peace, a necessity at that time. Yet, she subtly suggested that perhaps those characters didn’t truly meet their demise but instead found themselves in another world. “Anything can happen. It wraps up one storyline, but it doesn’t fully resolve because our series is known for keeping viewers on their toes,” she explained further.
She proposed that if individuals were still questioning the show’s seemingly unaware conclusion three years down the line, it would indicate that the sacrifices these characters made hadn’t been made in vain.
The Umbrella Academy revolves around seven extraordinary individuals, who were brought up together as brothers and sisters under the guardianship of Sir Reginald Hargreeves, a cunning entrepreneur often referred to as their “father.” Despite his strict training regimen aimed at controlling their powers, they struggle to fit into society. When an impending global catastrophe arises, these estranged siblings come together to confront and overcome it.
All seasons of The Umbrella Academy are available to stream on Netflix.
