‘It Will Be a Gay Explosion’: Agatha All Along Stars Explain Shows’ Unprecedented Queer Elements

As a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community and a die-hard Marvel fan, I am absolutely thrilled about the arrival of Agatha All Along! Having grown up with superheroes that were predominantly straight, it’s heartwarming to see Marvel Studios finally embracing diversity and representing us beautifully.

Marvel Studios together with Disney+ introduce a fresh new series titled Agatha All Along, serving as an extension of WandaVision. This series is notable for its portrayal of diverse queer characters and themes within the Marvel universe. The talented cast members, including Aubrey Plaza, Joe Locke, Sasheer Zamata, and Kathryn Hahn, have expressed enthusiasm over the show’s authentic representation of the LGBTQ+ community. Ali Ahn, portraying Alice Wu-Gulliver, even declared it as “the gayest show” in the Marvel Universe, a sentiment shared by all.

Aubrey Plaza, portraying Rio Vidal, hinted to Variety that the series will feature a significant display of LGBTQ+ themes by the end, and Kathryn Hahn, the main star, commended this storyline for its strong representation. She admired its balance of inclusivity while maintaining the unique essence of the show, describing it as “so natural” to the outlet.

Sasheer Zamata (Jennifer Kale) concurred that the show is rich in elements that resonate strongly with the queer community. In an interview with Variety, she emphasized that the show boasts a diverse cast of characters, each of whom finds strength within themselves to succeed. History shows us that witches have traditionally embodied ‘queer’ qualities, such as a strong emphasis on individual expression and often being marginalized due to various reasons. Zamata also pointed this out.

As a die-hard fan bursting with excitement, I can’t help but share the thrilling news! In an engaging interview centered around queer representation, the extraordinary Zamata bravely announced her bisexuality. She humbly acknowledged her deep admiration for the legendary lesbian comedian, Wanda Sykes, whose work has been a beacon of inspiration to her. On another note, Aubrey Plaza, in an enlightening 2016 interview with Advocate, openly declared her romantic interests towards both men and women. This revelation only adds to my admiration for these remarkable women who aren’t afraid to embrace their truths!

Joe Locke, who portrays Teen in the Marvel series, emphasized that while his character is indeed queer, it’s essential not to solely define him by this trait. There are deeper dimensions to Teen’s character. He highlighted that although Teen’s sexuality is an aspect of his personality, it isn’t the primary factor driving the character. Moreover, Locke praised the show for its abundance of well-developed queer characters.

The enticing new dark comedy series titled “Agatha All Along” is now available, perfectly timed with the arrival of Halloween and witch-themed festivities. This show unfolds after the events of WandaVision and follows Agatha Harkness, a malevolent character, as she enlists enigmatic partners in her mission to reclaim her lost powers. Starting September 18, you can stream the first two episodes of “Agatha All Along” exclusively on Disney+.
