‘It: Welcome to Derry’ Breaks Records with Massive Premiere Viewership

Wow, “It: Welcome to Derry” is already a massive hit! I was so excited for it, and it looks like a lot of other people were too. Warner Bros. Discovery said over 5.7 million people tuned in within just the first three days – that’s incredible!

The viewership count combines traditional HBO viewers, as measured by Nielsen, and those who streamed the show on HBO Max. This strong start makes it the third-most-watched premiere on HBO Max, following only “House of the Dragon” and “The Last of Us,” according to the company.

This new series tells the story of what happened before the movies “It” (2017) and “It Chapter Two” (2019), which were inspired by Stephen King’s famous 1986 horror novel. It’s set years earlier and explores the creepy origins of Derry, Maine – the town terrorized by the evil clown, Pennywise.

The new series, “It: Welcome to Derry,” comes from the team who made the “It” movies: Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti, and Jason Fuchs. Andy Muschietti directed multiple episodes, including the first one, and Jason Fuchs, along with Brad Kane, oversaw the show as showrunners.

The show stars Taylour Paige, Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, James Remar, Stephen Rider, Clara Stack, Amanda Christine, and Mikkal Karim-Fidler. Bill Skarsgård returns as the terrifying Pennywise, and is also a producer on the series.

The show started filming in May 2023, but production paused during the summer because of the SAG-AFTRA strike. Filming picked back up and finished in August 2024. It then officially premiered on HBO on October 26th.

The story opens in 1962 with a family settling in Derry around the time a child disappears. Not long after, the town is plagued by a series of unsettling incidents, hinting at a dark secret hidden within it.

High viewership demonstrates continued fan interest in the world of “It.” The show successfully builds upon the terrifying universe Stephen King created in his novel nearly forty years ago, using well-known characters, a spooky setting, and the intriguing history of the cursed town of Derry.
