‘It Was Very Hurtful’: Zoë Kravitz Regrets Leaving Mom Lisa Bonet To Live With Dad Lenny Kravitz Post-Divorce At Age 11

As an ardent admirer of Zoë Kravitz, I find her journey truly captivating. Her recent revelations about her childhood and the choices she made post-divorce are both heartbreaking and enlightening. It’s clear that Zoë’s life has been a delicate balance between two contrasting worlds – the simplicity of her mother Lisa Bonet and the unpredictability of her father, Lenny Kravitz.

Actress Zoë Kravitz, in a reflection of her past, confessed that she sometimes wishes she had made a different decision when, at the age of 11, she moved to live with her musician father, Lenny Kravitz, after her parents’ separation. She acknowledged this choice as one that caused pain.

In her recent Esquire cover feature, the actress who plays Batman reflected on her upbringing, expressing regret that she didn’t fully value the life her mother, Lisa Bonet, arranged for her because of her strict parenting style. She shared, “It was quite painful when I left her to live with my father, and unfortunately, he wasn’t around either.”

She regretted not valuing her mother’s care and proximity during that period, choosing to move away instead. She explained further, “She was so dedicated to protecting my purity and fostering my creativity because she understood the harsh reality of the world — once it’s lost, you can’t get it back.”

Lisa Bonet, famously recognized as Denise Huxtable from the television series The Cosby Show (airing from 1984 to 1992), legally parted ways with her husband Lenny in 1991. They had been a married pair for only four years before this separation. Their daughter, Zoë, was born in 1988.

For ten years, I resided with my mother, but as time progressed, I relocated cross-country to live with my father in Miami – a man with whom I hadn’t forged a strong bond prior. To add, the actress emphasized that both of my parents led starkly contrasting lives, resembling more like parallel worlds rather than one shared universe.

In contrast to her mother who was calm, organized, and reserved, her father lived a chaotic life. At the tender age of 11, she experienced a fresh understanding of liberty as a result of her father’s limited involvement at home.

As time passed, she came to understand that the initial excitement of her newfound liberty faded once she confronted the true aspects of the lifestyle. Moreover, she admitted that while her father never neglected her feelings, he simply held distinct perspectives on various matters.

In the end, the actress requested her father to relocate to New York – a place where she feels she belonged. “I’m not an exceptional actress,” she explained about the move, “but it made me feel secure.”

In terms of her professional endeavors, Zoë Kravitz’s innovative directorial debut, “Blink Twice,” is scheduled for release on August 23, 2024.
