‘It Was Ice Cold’: Meghan Markle Once Rejected ESPN Host Ryen Russillo Before Rising to Royal Fame

As an ardent fan of the captivating world of celebrity encounters and the intriguing twists they often bring, I find myself utterly spellbound by the tale of ESPN host Ryen Russillo and Meghan Markle. The allure of this story lies not just in the glamorous setting of a celebrity flag football game, but in the poignant lesson it offers about life’s unpredictable turns.

More recently, ESPN host Ryen Russillo recounted an incident where he attempted to connect with Meghan Markle, whom he felt was accessible at the time. However, Markle’s polite refusal of his invitation left Russillo recalling it as a “frosty” interaction.

In a recent installment of The Bill Simmons Podcast, Russillo reminisced about encountering Meghan Markle, now the Duchess of Sussex, at a celebrity flag football game held in February 2014. This event brought together notable figures such as Nina Dobrev, Michael B. Jordan, Chrissy Teigen, Hannah Davis, and others. As Russillo recounted, Markle, who was recognized primarily for her role on the series Suits at that time, went relatively unnoticed.

He said, “It was all of the [Sports Illustrated] swimsuit models. So, nobody was really paying any attention to Markle.”

As a dedicated follower, I, Russillo, spotted an opportunity. Given the circumstances, Markle might not have been as confident. Instead of approaching her during taping, I sent a direct message afterwards, extending an invitation for her to appear on my sports show, The Ryan Russillo Show, to discuss the upcoming fourth season of Suits.

He commented, “I felt something like, ‘That’s my territory. She might be having some self-doubts at the moment. She has never been more accessible than this.’

It appears that although Russillo employed a professional approach, his true motive went beyond that. However, Markle didn’t succumb to it. Instead, she declined the proposal, expressing her lack of knowledge about sports but appreciating the concept. Russillo found her response terse and seemed to perceive her attitude as being indifferent towards the idea.

The sports personality continued talking about her response, adding, “It was ice cold. It was, ‘Oh, I don’t know anything about sports, but thanks for the offer.”

Meghan Markle acted as Rachel Zane on Suits from 2011 until 2018, when she decided to leave the show to wed Prince Harry. Their wedding took place at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle. Afterward, they stepped down from their royal duties and moved on to other pursuits. In 2020, they relocated to Montecito, California, where they now live with their two children, Archie and Lilibet.

Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, generally keep a private life. They’ve also kept their distance from the rest of the British Royal Family, being left out of this year’s Christmas celebrations at Sandringham.
